The roads are pretty bad, does anyone think all these schools and cancellations are going to happen again tomorrow? I doubt its going to get any better out there..

Yeah I'm expecting that schools will remain closed tomorrow. The roads are just getting worse as some melting occurs underneath and then re-freezes. Earlier on my street, the sleet provided some traction, but now it's solid ice. Just need a zamboni and we could play ice hockey.

I bet most of the big districts around DFW will open at 10 tomorrow to give everyone more time to get in. But they will open.

I've noticed my driveway has some sleet but half of it is this thick layer of ice. Realllly slippery.

When it gets down to 9 degrees tonight, the roads are just going to be solid ice

I really want some hope for my area late week, but it seems the models are trending further south. That's been the general trend this winter, but then as the storm comes through it trends a little north. So hopefully it doesn't go so far south that the northward trend is still too south.

I know this is a Texas thread but what about SW Louisiana? Any real shot at snow?

Speaking of ice hockey, Portastorm was right! I just got done skating on the streets here in Denton. I took video but don't have an account to load it up with. I was getting thumbs up from drivers going by and the girls around my apartment complex were pretty impressed as well. :cheesy: So yeah, I skated on the streets in Texas during the middle of the day!

I hope it does trend a bit north for you! But that might be hard to do since the cold air is so dry at the surface. Best moisture return will be along the coast closer to the low forming in the central gulf.

Probably a good point about the big ISDs like Dallas, Ft. Worth and Plano. Here in Rockwall, this is the 1st day they cancelled this year, so they could afford to miss another and still use some built-in make-up days.

Hopefully we can get that low to form further west & north.

Any projections on any snow accumulation in the Del Rio area for Thursday evening/Friday morning?

Thanks!

It won't be so much the low, it's plenty big and vigorous in the entire southern plains. Only problem is moisture return.

Two places...1st place is that huge body of water known as the Pacific. 700mb flow will be sucking in Pacific moisture...moistening up the column. 2nd place is the Gulf. The low will throw plenty of moisture in.

This is very similar to Christmas 2004...but perhaps with a little more moisture available...and colder temps (so a higher ratio).

AFM are you buying the latest GFS showing less moisture for friday.

It didn't really dry it out that much. Precip totals are still similar than the 00z run...and its actually a lot more moist than the 06z run. 700 mb RH's are very high...so I don' buy the low QPF of the GFS. Think it will be more. Probably a blend of the GFS/CMC/EURO. So...widespread 1-3" over most of the area...pockets of higher.

I am a hockey player and a hockey dad - I too have skated the streets of Texas when we got the last big sleet/freezing rain storm in the early 2000's if I remember.

I put up 2x4 boards in a square yesterday, and threw down a tarp. I flooded the square yesterday morning, and the tarp held. First 1.5-2 inches frozen between midnight and now. It is 4 inches deep at furthest incline. If things keep going the way they are going -- I will be able to play hockey on an non-refrigerated artificial rink beside my house. I got a squigee and bucket for warm tap water to 'zam' the surface before we skate - hopefully tomorrow.

Here is the link to the mini-rink I have built. http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fb ... to_comment

But will they put school buses on the road and will parents opt to keep kids at home? They may ask teachers to try to come into work, but if the ice isn't gone it doesn't seem like a safe thing to put kids on buses and send them out on roads with ice. The district can get a waiver from the state for inclement weather such as this or a hurricane. In our case with Ike, the state waived the days we missed but it was left up to the district to make up those days.
