Re: Texas Winter 2020-2021
I see the NWS has updated its snowfall projections. Our area in East Texas now expected in 6-8 inch range.

Local mets have downgraded our totals a tad from 5-10 inch range to a 4-8 inch range. I just hope we can all get blanketed with snow!

DFW made it to 32F the streak is over/restarted. (Below freezing streak is to be below 32). Series of bad luck continues.

Same thing for record snowfall?
Before the NWS website revamp, many regions had a climo page with that kind of data (not sure about snow). Here's the "old" climo page from NWS Houston/Galveston: Interesting that Feb 12-16 has the records for February. 1899 - 6F, 1899 - 6F, 1899 - 10F, 1905 - 18F, and 1895 - 13F. Houston may break the record of 13F on Tuesday. My pipes are fully insulated. Will be taking our last shower tomorrow evening before filling up six HD 5-gal buckets of water and shutting off the water.

Here's a plot of 12Z models. All show pretty darn cold Monday and very darn cold Tue AM. The UKMET's -1F for Tuesday seems a bit extreme.

Got 4 6-Gallon buckets filled with water & ready to go . . .
Got 45g ready...water for cooking drinking pets and flushing of the toilets

Latest FWD graphic still solid with 4-6 for DFW and widespread south with more 6-8 just barely northwest and edging closer. So, no concerning stuff there.

Maybe looking at mid or high 30s at the airport if skies stay this clear.
The temps, and precip at those temps, would make this event historic enough... if things hold to form of course.

NWS actually adjusted today's high in Longview to what I would have expected at 32F.
So of course temps decide to bust high as we've made it to 34F. Amazing how Tyler just sits there anchored at 27F. Gilmer 28F. Mount Pleasant 31F.

Man that is weak. Gosh darnit. I thought I would leave work with strong winds and some flurries or something. Would have liked to get the record. Oh well more cold to come. With snow.

When should we start seeing the arctic cold coming down? This evening or sometime tomorrow? I've missed a lot of posts today.

EWX discussion:
Our official forecast will for snow will show 3-4 inches with isolated higher amounts north of a Kerrville to Austin
line and 2-3 inches north of a Rocksprings to Boerne to LaGrange Line. Less than 2 inches is expected for the remainder of the area.
For ice, greater than a tenth of an inch is possible along and east of the I35/37 corridor.

Keep in mind that when the Dewpoints are lower once night comes in, Temperatures are going to fall faster . . .
EDIT: Peak heating is now here, Temperatures should start to drop starting in the next few hours or so . . .

Look at that. The GFS operational even predicted the 3 hours of sun and the temp hitting 32F. Look at the late week precip totals.

One NWS streak is over for DFW (below freezing) but they appear to keep track of the other streak (at or below freezing). Here’s the NWS Freeze Summary Page for DFW:
https://www.weather.gov/fwd/d32info
Notice how they list it at the bottom and graphically:
Most consecutive hours below freezing: 295 (7 am Dec 18 - 2 pm Dec 30, 1983)
Most consecutive hours at or below freezing: 295 (7 am Dec 18 - 2 pm Dec 30, 1983)

For those winter weather enthusiasts, this afternoon’s Forecast Discussion out of the FW office should get your blood flowing...
Highlight: they are raising snowfall totals to 4-8 inches across most of the North Texas region...much higher rations, DGZ juiced up!

33F now unfortunately. It doesn't make it any less impressive just would have been nice to stay in the books. Like Bubba said of all things to get a few bits of sun at the wrong time! Still got a shot at third or fourth.

It's the ratios. It doesn't take much. Our minds are trained 1:1.
Snow Amounts:
This afternoon`s forecast update has bumped up forecast snowfall
totals, but not for reasons that are typical to North and Central
Texas. The synoptic pattern is atypical of a "heavy snow producer"
with the difference being the very cold air that has been in place
now for several days. Forecast soundings indicate strong forcing
and saturation within multiple dendritic growth zones. This will
favor the development of dendrite snow crystals that then fall
into a near isothermal layer...further growing as they aggregate
ice...then return into a dendritic growth zone above the surface
further growing the snow crystals. These microphysical processes
will favor a low-density and high snow-ratio (10-15:1) compared
the typical heavy wet snow (5-10:1) we get here. This will allow
for snow to accumulate quickly and even allow for snow drifts to
develop with blowing snow. It`s still unknown how high the drifts
will be, but expect drifts on any north-facing elevations.
