I also want to point out that the shower dropped my surface temp three degrees. Tells me once precip starts it's going to be an efficient temperature reduction device.

Our temps haven't dropped yet. Currently 50f. Dew point 29f. I think the fact you mention is what most of our locals are missing in their thought process, They have been dropping our amounts and one has called it a bust.

One local media outlet now reporting that a bunch of viewers are calling in from Travis and Williamson counties with light rain mixed with sleet observations. The lead PWC met and the official PWC mascot -- Bandit the Labrador/Catahoula mix -- were just outside but saw no signs of sleet.

I honestly have not paid much attention to the latest soundings or Skew-T's or anything as I've been more curious about the location of the ULL, any connection with the Pacific, precip chances, etc. So, I really don't know. I know the drier layer of air is relatively shallow and that we are dealing with a warm nose at about 925 mb. But that's the extent of my knowledge on that question. Based on what EWX is saying, it's sounds like another wintry mix.

I think it will start as rain but quickly transition.

Well gang, my palms are wrapped and we're all set for this next event. The temp here has been dropping about a degree per hour under the clouds, but the much colder/drier air is finally trickling into the Houston area. The dew point in College Station is 12, while it's still 31 at Hobby. With this dry air, it won't take much to push the surface down to freezing.

I'm not surprised by tonight's model swing. They always have a hard time with these disturbances that trek across northern Mexico. At this point, I'd be watching the radar and water vapor loops. Looks a lot like last Friday, maybe a tad colder.

City of Houston City Closures

AlertHouston | Winter Weather Expected Tuesday, City of Houston Suspends all Non-Essential City Functions

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Warning for Houston for much of Tuesday. Main threats from this system include freezing rain and sleet. This will cause dangerous driving conditions throughout the City.

Residents are urged to begin preparing for this threat by ensuring they have a plan for communication and travel during this. This includes protecting People, Pipes, Pets and Plants from the impact of cold weather.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads on Tuesday, as freezing rain will cause roads to become icy, especially at elevated roads, overpasses and bridges.

City Closures

As a result of this winter weather threat, the City will close all non-public safety services on Tuesday, January 28th. Only those services (such as public safety) that are deemed "essential" will be operational. This will include the closure of libraries, service centers, courts and park facilities. Trash collection will also be delayed for a day as a result of the closure. Residents scheduled for collection on Tuesday should prepare to have it collected Wednesday.

In order to assure the safety of our employees, non-essential City employees are being asked not to report to work tomorrow. All essential employees will need to report at their regularly scheduled time and location. If an employee has questions on their status, or is unable to report as directed, they are asked to contact their supervisor.

The City of Houston will also activate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 4:00am Tuesday morning in response to the impending winter weather situation. The EOC is the central coordination facility for a citywide emergency response. The center will be staffed with representatives from various City departments including the Houston Fire Department, Houston Police Department, Public Works & Engineering Department, and the Office of Emergency Management.

0zCMC has a lot of moisture (0.5''+ for the McAllen area) to work with for Deep South Texas Tuesday Night/Wednesday Morning with temperatures in the mid to low 30s....things are looking good for us in Deep South Texas.

Howdy old neighbor. I lived in Corinth (Taylor's Ridge) for about a year before we upped-and-moved down to H-town. Nice area. I remember we had a nice snow up there the winter of 2004-2005. That was my last winter rodeo up there. The year before that was the big Valentine's day snowstorm (was living in Frisco for that one...)

Too true, 'tis all too true. It quite often gets cold enough, but here the elements have to be *just right* to get any real action. And that's rare. Looks like this will be one of those rare events. It appears that things are really starting to cook over there!
