Ralph's Weather, hundreds of North Texas school districts - not to mention insurance companies - would argue that the ball got kicked on Sunday night and Monday morning. And then some.

I am not sure why but I have this feeling (with no evidence whatsoever) that tonight is going surprise everyone.
A lot of people will be surprised -- both good and bad. Some people may miss the precip completely.

Does sleet and freezing rain count now? Is that what everyone really wants? Not snow? Come on, wait for the snow.
12Z NAM has a little warmer air aloft than the GFS, and thus has the snow forming north of the D-FW Metroplex tonight. So the GFS is south, NAM is north. Somebody will likely get an inch or more of snow tonight (not Houston, though).
I just hope that everyone sees measurable snow tonight so we can stop all this talk of winter weather...

We have pilled up 46 pages in this thread since the NWS in FW posted their special winter weather statement last Friday about this weeks storm systems.

Oh I agree, I missed work yesterday because of it. I was just going by wxman57's strict definition of snow.

As much as we need the rain, I'd really rather have some snow. I don't remember any winter with as much 33f and rain. Just snow goshdarnit!
On the other hand, the bluebonnets have had their 3 freezes and abundant rain. That bodes well for a good showing.

Really tough forecast for Fort Worth NWS tonight....100 mile difference between NAM and GFS/Canadian on where heavy axis of snow will set up. NAM = DFW to Texarkana gets pounded, Canadian RGEM = Waco to Longview. Big difference in where to hoist warnings!!

Wow!

I had to re read portions of that discussion several times that confused me. Reading Cavanaugh's discussions makes me realize how very little I know about how weather patterns work.
Hampshire's AFD this morning out of EWX was also a good read.
Good stuff!

Our local OCM Tim Heller explained what happened in Huntsville......About the snow but not snow...
A little meteorology lesson for you this morning. The precipitation that fell in Huntsville last night was a special kind of snow called "snow grains."
I along with other meteorologists was puzzled by the reports of snow because an upper air analysis collected by meteorology students at nearby Texas A&M University showed a very warm layer of air aloft, which should have melted the snow before it hit the ground.
Chris Hebert from Impact Weather solved the mystery:
"Looking at the vertical temperature profile, it doesn’t support snow as we normally think of snow. But it does support something similar – snow grains. Snow grains are tiny ice crystals (not snow “flakes”) that can form within low stratus clouds in that shallow sub-freezing layer above Huntsville. Individual snow grains typically measure <1mm in size, smaller than sleet. However, I imagine that as snow grains collide with each other on the way down they can grow into larger clusters that give the appearance of large snowflakes."

Re: Texas Winter 2014-2015
The NAM and GFS have different opinions as to where the snow will fall overnight. The NAM is farther north, to include more of the D-FW Metroplex. The GFS is mostly south of D-FW:
12Z NAM:

12Z GFS:

12Z NAM:

12Z GFS:
