Re: Texas Winter 2024-2025
Where is the second, colder front currently located? For us DFW folks today was supposed to be sunny in the 40s. This evening sometime is when the big push comes for OK, TX, and LA. It should get cloudy tomorrow I would think as the system approaches.

We know this story. Ice. A little snow for an hour.
Our chance for just snow was Monday, and it’s gone.
Glad folks south will get something though.

Obviously all over the SE event but the 00z Euro opens the gates from Siberia in the long range. Goodness. January isn't done yet.

Yeah I wouldn’t mind so much if last storm didn’t bust so hard. Had our hopes up for weeks just to get maybe a half inch lol

Also, shocker, the brutal cold is no more.
Won’t even be below freezing for highs this week. That’s “Arctic” cold?

I'm assuming you're speaking about your area? As I had snow all day last Thursday and saw up to 3 inches of accumulation here.

The GFS has a stronger HP currently crossing the border than it had for the previous 48 hours of runs. Good news!

I understand, exactly. I don’t want to get my hopes up but I’ve never seen anything like this with less than 3 days to go before the event. And it’s not just a dusting to an inch we are talking about. I sure hope it pans out. I’ll really feel better tomorrow night if things still look good.
My sister lives in Prairieville, just to your south. She's excited about snow, too. The event will be within the HRRR (High Resolution Rapid Refresh) model tomorrow. That should provide a little more detailed forecast.

This is more of a stronger Canadian front than Arctic air. Temps are above zero all the way north to southern Montana and southern North Dakota. No extreme cold up there.

I guess the "Siberian" air had a change of plans.

Im expecting at least 48 hours of below freezing temperatures in se texas, schools definitely will be closed tuesday, but wouldnt be surprised if schools close on wednesday and possibly even thursday with snow/ice being very slow to melt, dont see us getting out of the 30’s until late after noon on thursday. but even then their could be a 2nd system that moves through bringing another round of mixed precipitation depending on temperatures at that time

Isn’t it in Canada? It looks like bone chilling cold up there. Unless you think your wall will hold

Snow in Texas, 8th wonder of the World
Don't use my posts as forecast; I'm not a licensed meteorologist! I just endorse cold weather, alright?
All observations I note are for Temple, Texas unless otherwise stated.

I had sleet then snow. Got about 3.5 so not bad. Covered the grass. Not complaining about that storm. Just hard to get a repeat.

I think temps in Katy will drop to freezing early Tuesday morning and rise above early Wednesday afternoon. Close to 36 hrs. Regardless of the type of precipitation between Monday evening and 3pm Tuesday, the roads wil be icy, at least any elevated road or bridge. That ice won't be gone by Wednesday morning, so schools will likely be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

You can monitor temperatures worldwide using the link below. Temps in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan are running -10F to -20F. Cold, but nothing extreme for them this time of year. Temps in northern North Dakota are running -5 to -10 now. No below-zero temps down to Kansas or Oklahoma, as with some very strong fronts of the past.
Here's the link. You can add cold fronts on the map. Secondary surge of a little colder Canadian air is reaching southern Oklahoma now.

I do agree though with the SE ridge in play and shallower air the next storm system may end up more ice than snow.

12z Euro is more aggressive with a winter storm, definitely more moisture, axis of heavy snow is focused from the western side of houston- points east, significantly ice accumulations of .15 to the west and SW of houston, with some big sleet totals , highs stay in the mid- upper 20’s all day on tuesday, euro keeps highs below freezing on wednesday as well

I used to live up North. Snow pack goes down with temps below freezing with the sun out. The top of the snow melts from radiation and snow sublimates. A couple of sunny days will remove 1 or 2 inches of snow/slush except in the shade. 6 or 8 inch 6Z Euro would obviously last longer, and snow that melts quickly on sun heated roads will turn to ice again. Euro would mean an extra day or two after the storm w/ road issues.
