Re: Texas Winter 2020-2021
Sleeting in west Houston 30 min ago. Piled up on the ground. Thought I saw some light snow as it ended. Another round almost here. That's a good sign, as it means the sub-freezing air is too thick for freezing rain. Will get more snow overnight. Water shut off to house. Pipes drained. Spigots covered. Now we wait for the thaw...

Is this a faster transition to snow than the forecast for NW Houston? It sure seems like it. If the switch has happened already, I feel much better about outages, at least here. I hope it holds.

Went and measured a few spots
Back patio 4.5"
Front yard 5.2"
Center of car roof 4.75"
Very lite snow still falling, unless there is new development to the south or west this is it for storm system #1

...and now a very heavy sleet storm. This is like a lab in various freezing precipitation types.

I have a good 4" layer of powdery snow. I love it! Messy spots you just swipe it back and fills in
. It's like sweet grains of sugar but without the problems!

Taking a quick peak ahead, the 18z Euro is a big hitter with the next system for N & NE Texas, basically 8"+ for everyone north of 20.

The WPC has put out a 5% chance for 12 inches of snow in 24 hours in Central Oklahoma for Storm #2 . . .

I did the same. Not taking any chances with this extreme cold. I have three bathtubs filled and plenty of drinking water - we'll survive. I just hope we keep the power on. Down to 28.9 here with snow flurries and the occasional sleet shower.

Fingers crossed we make it through the night.
Is this something I should go check on at my house?
If you have a Heat Pump I would.

It sounds like sleet but I think it’s crystallized snow... not going out to look!

If you have a heat pump, you should be running on auxiliary heat/emergency heat mode. Too cold to run a heat pump now
EM Heat cuts off the Heat Pump. Aux Heat is Heat Pump and furnace heat. At least that's my understanding.
I'd rather it be off entirely then it trying to keep up and burn out or freeze up. Any HVAC folks lurking or online?

30.9 here in SL. All sleet. Good news. Roof is covered, ground getting slick. Ready for the snow transition later!

Re: Texas Winter 2020-2021
The convective nature of the development approaching the Eastern metroplex is why the models wanted to give the SE counties more QPF. It’s early, but that reflectivity looks very exciting for anyone east of Dallas in a few hours. Hopefully Dallas catches the back edge.

No, it automatically shifts into aux heat. Forcing it will skyrocket bills.

I’ve got an ecobee thermostat. Earlier I got a message saying that my Aux heat had been running for a certain amount of time. Maybe 180 minutes.

Looking at the radar, looks like a few dry slots over us in Houston. The good news is that the radar shows blue and not pink.

But in Aux both my Heat Pump, which was buried in a snow drift and has a block ice inside of it because it could not thaw, and electric heat were running. I'm trying to theoretically save the Heat Pump from damage. Ironically my electric plan gets cheaper per KWh the more I use. I'll put it back to just heat perhaps tomorrow when it "warms up" and make sure the fan is not frozen over I guess. Just trying to survive.
I was also concerned about short cycling the heat pump.

Re: Texas Winter 2020-2021
I can’t help but feel like we are going to miss out here in extreme SE Texas (Port Neches). Our temperature is hanging just above freezing longer than expected and seems like our window for snow will be pretty small.
