True, it's very, very rare for snow in Houston. Hurricanes named Ike are far more common than snowstorms by whatever name the Weather Channel is using.

But there was the snow on Christmas Eve 2004.

And there was also that one-time state-record 20-inch snowfall in Houston back in February 1895. Only the Panhandle has beaten that mark!

The White Christmas in 2004 was unbelievable. I lived in Chicago for a few years and my first white Christmas was in Houston. What are the odds of that!! I should have played he lottery that day

gpsnowman wrote:downsouthman1, its mainly because of the hype of all the local mets, and models telling/showing us Metroplexers a big snowstorm is coming only to see a few flurries. Some areas did see accumulations. Don't get me wrong, we are all grateful for the rain, sleet, and snow we got this morning. But I don't think I have ever seen so much forecasted with really nothing of the kind happened in DFW. Maybe we are a bit spoiled because of being more north but all precip is appreciated, no matter what form.

While the middle of the Metroplex didn't get a ton of snow, areas just SE got 3-3.5 inches. Most of the local mets were saying track would play a huge part, and they were right. We got snow, we just missed the bullseye this time.

There is always Dallas / Fort Worth. Less humid more winter weather and it too is a economic powerhouse :). Just short plane ride lol

The real kick in the pants was when more heavy rain fell on our half inch of snow before the event was over.

Man, what a difference 24 hours can make. Went from a couple of dozen members and over 100 guests last night at this time to three forum members and 37 guests tonight.

Must have been a threat of snow or something last night! :D

Pretty awesome write-up by Steve McCauley on his Facebook page detailing what happened last night, explaining the temperature profile that led to the missed forecast by everyone in the Metroplex including him. In fact, it was the first miss in 21 tries for his Stat Method.

What's really interesting is that he confirmed what many of us believed, that if that temperature profile had been one degree different, it would have been a HUGE snowstorm for the North Texas region, particularly the Metroplex.

Here's one quote that caught my eye: "But truth be told ... if that slightly above freezing layer had not been there, the Stat Method would still have missed the snowfall total forecast, because this would have been a 4 to 9 inch snow event for the Metroplex!!"

If you get a chance, go read his explanation and graphics. It's Cavanaugh worthy. :D

It's an absolute masterpiece isn't it? He is simply the best when it comes to writing educational and informative forecast discussions.

Looks like one slim chance for wintry weather in Austin tomorrow before the PWC can put this ugly and disappointing season (at least for our part of the state) out of its misery.

Strangely enough, forecast for today is snow with 1-3 inch accumulations and NWS has a high on Friday of 28 with snow for the entire day, then changing over to sleet pellets and freezing rain over Friday night into Saturday. Interested to see what happens.

Wouldn't expect to see any heavy snow tomorrow in our area, but it does look there is a decent chance of seeing the white stuff fly out of the sky. Maybe everyone can at least get a dusting to an inch out of it.

*Fingers crossed*
