At my apartments the residents are building huge snowmen and are having awesome snowball fights. I would be out there, but I have come down with something and don't want to make it worse by being out in the cold. :(

The back-building on this system has been unreal. Just parked itself over the metroplex.

So, how does the official snow total work when temps are above freezing? There has been a lot of bottom melting so I assume it's all taken into account. i.e. we won't actually step into a foot of snow anywhere while that may end up being the total.

Yep. SREF was not that impressive, but with that said while running errands earlier there was a bit of 'pin head' sleet mixing in FWIW.

A few random observations:

1. This seems to me to be almost the "Perfect (Winter)Storm" for North Texas in that wind profiles allowed for a substantial moisture feed while at the same time we were just cold enough aloft for heavy snow to be cranked out by the approaching storm system.

2. I would guess - unofficially of course - that road conditions will begin to go downhill quickly from 5 p.m. onward as sunlight supply begins to dwindle away.

3. I'm curious how FW NWS will explain the fact that their less than 1" of snow on grassy surfaces less than 48 hours ago has turned into a big-ticket historical snow event that could end up with double-digit snowfall amounts.

Playing conservative, I would suppose.

48 hours ago all the US models had the lowest 3kft above freezing.

the foreign models had the event nailed...but low qpf....nothing of this magnitude.

I think it was in the link I posted earlier on how to actually measure snowfall, but as I understand it, there is a difference between measuring snowfall (measured to nearest 10th of an inch on an hourly basis, then the surface is cleaned so that another measurement can be taken an hour later) and measuring actual snow depth.

Yeah, i gotta give it to Wxman57 and a few others. There wers several on this board that were on this sucker from the beginning. Even when the models swayed away from this being an event whatsoever, yall stuck to your guns and not just the model guidance. VERY good forecasters on this site (with the exception of Waco being the battle ground for the freezing line ;)). The next few weeks appear to be promising!

Not only that, at the same time, abundant moisture feed was coming in from the Pacific (courtesy of the southern jet smacked right at us). I'll take one of these every year please!

I did, and now he owes me breakfast!!!!! :cheesy: When I called him this morning his was just laughing, he knew why I called him that early. If I could I would share it with you all cause it was this board that gave me the confidence to make that bet. Thanks to everyone.

Took a look at the latest Intellicast regional radar shot and I thought "It still looks like it did this morning at 9 a.m."

Then I realized that it is now snowing from nearly Little Rock, Arkansas almost all the way back to Lubbock, Texas! Now that's impressive!!!

Canadian model had even more QPF--->UKMET, GEM, ECMWF nailed it toward the end...GFS had it nailed but backed off....
