It seems like the nws and most local Mets in houston are discounting the short term models and sticking with heavier snow amounts

It’s accumulating fast on the ground. Looking at a image from TxDOT, can see they already have a dusting and visibility already low

Don't use my posts as forecast; I'm not a licensed meteorologist! I just endorse cold weather, alright?

All observations I note are for Temple, Texas unless otherwise stated.

Sometimes you go with gut experience (pattern recognition) and hope it pays off over technology. My guess is you have a few folks in those offices who have seen this at play before (perhaps elsewhere too). Hopefully those totals verify for all. Rare opportunity for Houston. They do have some support however with other guidance so not completely going against all the modeling, but definitely discounting HRRR which is also rare.

Drizzle is already being reported on the south side of SA. Again, this is a few hours ahead of schedule.

Yeah won't be long here for light glazing. Up in North Bexar it's already below freezing (31-30).

Models starting to ramp up the northern stream portion. most showing accumulation across OK and across the Red River. WRF models starting to see the N TX area also. Models usually miss these northern stream events until very short range.

Yeah once anything falls out of the sky, the temp will drop so fast. Wet bulb is below freezing and the columns are all below 0C. In Galveston, the warm nose is coming in later and it gets very close to 0C.

Mets, do you all remember a time when the gulf low was so far out in the gulf where off the shore of Galveston had a bullseye for snow? I dont remember a time of that happening. Possible the low is too far off the shore in the models?

SHV expanded the WWA north to include everything south of I20. I won't be surprised to see further expansions by FTW and SHV later today as more data and obs come in. It is def a now cast event. Where snow falls tonight temps along and N of I20 will crash into the mid and even low 20s as wet bulbing occurs.

I left east Texas a little earlier than had planned because I had a hunch some frozen precip would fall along I20 this evening and tonight. Thanks to Ralph's Weather for staying on the north Texas threat for tonight!!

This much lift plus cold temps at surface and aloft usually produces.
