Re: Texas Winter 2017-2018
Severe to extreme drought conditions present up in this area of N TX per the US Drought Monitor 1/23/18. Aside from the very light drizzle, we haven't seen any measurable rain in quite some time.

Re: Texas Winter 2017-2018
I'm cooling things down across Canada and the northern U.S. during the second week of February, prepping Texas for the big winter weather event I've promised for mid month. GFS has caught on.

Re: Texas Winter 2017-2018
Euro ensembles are in line with the long-range GFS operational run, indicating cross-Polar flow (from Siberia) setting up early in February. This flow may bring down the coldest air of the season across the Central and Southern Plains between the 10th-16th. Way too early to tell if we'll have an active southern stream or any shortwaves moving through the cold air, but I think I'll be able to manage at least one for a Texas winter weather event.

It is just so strange of Wxman57 to be the spokesperson for cold mongers!!! Just so used to the heat miser being DR NO

Even as the Heat Miser last winter, I always stated what I thought would happen. There wasn't much cold around last winter, right? "DR NO" was correct. Now, the Heat Miser may not have been too disappointed that there was no winter. The pattern I see developing in February has the potential to be colder than we saw last week. "Potential" being the key word here for now.

Oh trust me, I know exactly what you are seeing even though we don't publicly post about it. It will be talked about more when it hits inside 7 days.
Still it's like getting cake and ice cream for us from the newly minted snow miser

We've seen glimpses of the potential extremes on the guidance past few days.
And still 1064mb when it gets into Montana! As wxman57 noted, potential .........

Do you think the upper TX coast will get the winter weather event, too?

Do you think the cold will make it all the way to the coast or is it going to be confined further north? Usually the cold makes its way through. Just curious if the potential is there for everyone or only for those in the plains and areas north?

You left out 1998, second hottest summer next to 1980.

Hey Corpus ... button up down there! Don't even speak of Summer 2011.

Let's just enjoy this winter as much as we can before Mr. said Cold Mongerer turns the furnace on all of us.

I'm not a pro met, but I would think if it is dense enough, the cold will accelerate south on its own mass and subsequent momentum. Hard to hold back that kind of cold air. It will be more modified as it oozes south, mixing with the lower latitude air temps. May be less modified than earlier in the season since the sun angle is lower, and there is more snow coverage to ride across. Also, there is a two month latent/adjustment period of Earth temperatures from the lowest sun angle (December 21st), which should also help the front to keep moving. My guess anyway.

Not at all, as I've said. Summers are always hot. I have my eye on next October through April...

The pattern and Pacific block is continental cold. It isn't focused in any one region. More like the nature of coast to coast cold. There will be tremendous cold air in Canada the likes not seen in years, maybe longer.

There may be plenty of cold air moving south out of Canada for everyone. We won't be greedy in Texas.

The Texas thread keeps me going during the winter months even though I'm in Florida I enjoy reading the posts, until hurricane season starts again.
