Ice buildup around Denison is starting to get me a bit concerned. Still holding at 29 and the rain has gotten a little heavier in the last hour or two.

My wife and I went down the road for dinner - roads are slushy for the most part now. But the ice build up is between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch thick now and there is a significant glaze building on trees and powerlines around our part of town.

The ice buildup is enough that we lost our satellite reception a short while ago, the dish is caked with ice. If this keeps up for a few more hours, I'm afraid power disruption isn't too far away.

We have been below freezing all day long, 30 degrees currently. The rain hasn't been accreting on the trees so far today but the snow also hasn't been melting. The glaze of ice deposited atop the snow last night is helping to insulate it from the sunlight radiation and rainfall.

As the sun is setting here, the dripping from my roof has ceased... I wonder when we will actually rise above freezing, considering we were supposed to be in the upper 30s by now.

Our Winter Weather Advisory just expired, with this explanation:

DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 345 PM CST SAT FEB 28 2015/
TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN NEAR STEADY OR SLOWLY WARM TONIGHT WITH
THE FREEZING LINE AT SUNSET ROUGHLY FROM GOLDTHWAITE TO
WEATHERFORD TO GAINESVILLE. WE EXPECT PERIODS OF LIGHT FREEZING
DRIZZLE IN LOCATIONS ALONG AND WEST OF THE FREEZING LINE WITH
PERIODS OF MAINLY DRIZZLE OR VERY LIGHT RAIN ELSEWHERE. WE HAVE
DECIDED TO EXTEND THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY UNTIL MIDNIGHT FOR
LOCATIONS WEST OF A LINE FROM GOLDTHWAITE TO WEATHERFORD TO
MINERAL WELLS AND LET THE CURRENT WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY EXPIRE
AT 6 PM FOR ALL OTHER COUNTIES THAT CURRENTLY REMAIN IN THE
ADVISORY. THE SNOW COVER TODAY HAS BEEN LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR
THE SLOW WARMUP AS EVIDENT BY THE MORE RAPID WARMUP IN THE
COUNTIES THAT SAW VERY LITTLE MEASURABLE WINTER PRECIPITATION.
ADDITIONAL ICE ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD BE NEGLIGIBLE OVERALL BUT THE
ADDITION OF EVEN LIGHT ICING TO ALREADY ICY SPOTS WILL CONTINUE TO
CREATE TRAVEL IMPACTS. WE EXPECT THAT ALL SITES WILL WARM TO
FREEZING OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE OVERNIGHT AS THE SHALLOW ARCTIC AIRMASS
CONTINUES TO SLOWLY MODIFY DUE TO RELATIVELY WARM PRECIPITATION
FALLING THROUGH IT.

TEMPERATURES SUNDAY MORNING SHOULD BE ABOVE FREEZING WITH THE
EXCEPTION OF A FEW EXTREME NORTHWEST COUNTIES.

...except that the temperature hasn't risen as expected thus far. Hopefully we won't have a surprise ice event tonight.

Yeah, we were supposed to hit 33-34 today, didn't happen. I doubt we're going to go down, but then I'm not sure we're going to go up much either. Still at 29 here. Icicles were non-existent earlier, building rapidly now. The glaze of ice is really becoming pronounced in the last 2-3 hours. If we stay at or below freezing for another 3-6 hours, could be some trouble developing.

Highest temperature I saw today was 35. It's back down to 34 and it's been drizzling for hours. We're fine as long as it doesn't drop much more.

Sounds like it's going to be bad in DFW though. Sure doesn't look like it will warm up there tonight but I'm no expert.

Today marks the one week point of at least some form of frozen precip on the ground in DFW. When my wife and I left a work party last Sunday night, ice had already started forming on cars. In the brief warm-up middle week, not all the ice had melted leaving patchy ice spots in the yard. Then Thursday and Friday happened. My goodness, what a week. How cold will it get next week? Thunderstorms are predicted for Tuesday followed by more winter fun. Very cool.

Yes, Texas Snowman, melting has stopped here for the most part as well. It should warm a bit overnight even with temps today lower than predicted. I do hope the 70 forecasted for Tuesday is legit for the purpose of a good thunderstorm.

Haven't even gotten above 30 yet today, been getting a quite a bit of freezing rain falling, I wonder if it's frozen on my snowman?

Average temp this week(7days) for DFW was 32.9 degrees. Average is 53. We were 21 degrees below average for the week. 2 winter storm watches , one winter storm warning , 2 winter weather advisories( which one last 2 days) several inches of snow and sleet , freezing rain and some
healthy rain totals to boot .

I cannot recall a weeklong period of wintry weather in North Texas like many of you have experienced starting last weekend. What a stretch of winter for y'all.

Crap, Porta, I feel awful for you and other Austinites. Before last week, the DFW area had barely sniffed winter. I have an idea. If next weeks weather pattern does not favor the Austin area and does Big D, drive on up!! Plenty of Metroplexers to accommodate the great Portastorm. First Shiner Bock is on me, the rest are on Ntwx and Orangeblood and Iorange55. Beer will flow like wine.

It's been an incredible week, I can't remember ever having 3 storms in a row like this. It's good for me as a pizza driver who knows a little something about wintry driving - I've made well over a thousand dollars this week between tips and overtime. :D

I'm enjoying a long overdue day off today. My trees have accrued about a tenth of an inch of ice since sundown, though the sidewalks and streets are still merely wet. The air temperature is holding steady at 30 degrees. The snow on my yard has been replaced with a sheet of ice - water percolating underneath has dissolved the snow, so if I break a plate of ice (about a half inch thick) off the ground, only bare grass is below it now.

This is my rain gauge, holding the fruits of the past week:

Anyone ever find out what the snow to liquid ratio ended up being ? I think someone said they were going to measure by melting what they had ??

It was opticsguy.

opticsguy wrote:the 2.3" of snow in my rain gauge melted to 0.16". That's a pretty good ratio for TX snow.

About 15:1 it appears.
