I agree. This will likely be a big trouble maker and has been on the 'horizon' for some time. The 'hints' have been rather strong for the February 24-27th time frame before the OP GFS decided to start flip flopping.

Does anyone have a link to a DFW climate summary for the winter so far? I know we're 3rd all-time in snowfall, but wondering about the average temp. ranking.

Thanks gboudx.

For those too lazy to look, in DFW -

4 deg's below normal (daily means) for December and right on average for January - thanks largely to the " January thaw" we got for a couple of weeks.

We've been below average (daily high) every day in February, and most days by a significant margin. It's looking like the aforementioned period in January may go down as our only true respite from a significantly colder-than-average winter. As if I had to remind anyone!!

Would like to see how it actually ranks. I'm sure the NWS will put out something later or in March.

Well, I can tell you how this winter ranks in at least two unofficial ways.

My wife - who is cold natured - has burned significantly more firewood already this winter than any other previous winter before. And there's still nearly a month left of potential cold weather left!

Second, our cats are indoor/outdoor cats who love to go outside and stay there. Not this winter. You can't get 'em out the door!

Still in the 30s here today so far with bright sunshine.

Hoping for one more good North Texas snowstorm so Dallas can get its seasonal record. :D

And still hoping for Portastorm and friends down south to get in on the winter fun. Maybe early next week will be the ticket...

Me too Texas Snowman! Here's hoping for one more big, Texas-sized event that would give all of us (or many of us) a "snow day" from school or work ... a few days of bitter cold, then bring of spring!

For those with access, go check out today's Japanese model run. It's looking very interesting for early next week.

I have successfully completed treatment, Tireman4! :cheesy:

No longer do I allow the GFS to rule my life. Dr. Van Pelt is no longer necessary. Now c'mon, get on board and let's get that winter storm going for next week (or this weekend, even!).

It has a storm moving through Texas on Sunday bringing winter weather into Oklahoma and the North Texas red river counties. In its wake, the 850mb 0 degree C line moves down to San Antonio and College Station. With the cold air in place, a S/W appears to be moving into South Central Texas from Northern Mexico on Tuesday.

In my opinion, this model has been one of the better models in picking up on longer term trends this winter so it bears watching.

Something just doesn't look right with the way the GFS is handling the energy in the Northern Rockies later this week. The energy appears to retrograde too far west. The Japanese model takes that energy and cuts the trough deeper into the southern plains, while at the same time sending pieces of energy in the SJT across Northern Mexico. The UKMET looks somewhat similar.

When I came home today I saw that the ruler I'd placed on the front yard had finally fallen over and was resting on a small patch of remnant ice. :( We hardly knew ye, snow. Please come back soon!

Frosty the Snowman had to hurry on his way. But he waved goodbye saying don't you cry, I'll be back again some day...
