Prognostications on Winter '12/'13 ?

#1 Postby WeatherGuesser » Sat Sep 08, 2012 11:22 am

In many areas of the U.S., there really was no winter '11/'12 to speak of and this summer has been hot and dry in most areas.

I've had some old timers tell me that the last time they saw such a hot and dry summer, the following winter was brutally cold and snowy.

So, cranking up your folklore and old-wives-tales, give us your best guesstimates on what you think the U.S. can expect this winter.

Note that 'normal' is a relative term that varies by locale and this really only applies to areas that would be expected to see freezing temperatures and widespread snowfall.

Forecasting Region by Region this is what I predict.

Northeast: I predict the northeast will be colder and snowier normal, especially compared to the rest of the U.S.

Southeast: The southeast will start out this upcoming winter with about average temperatures and precipitation but then quickly start to become colder than normal temperature wise as we head through December. I think as we head through December it will become wetter than normal too, with places that usually get snow in the southeast getting a little above average on snowfall.

Midwest: The Midwest will be colder and snowier than normal too, similar to the northeast.

West: The West should be where it will remain warmer than average and drier than average possibly too.

Colder and drier than normal, colder given the NAO and the possibility for blocking over Greenland. For my locale I predict drier than normal because cold air intrusions all the way to the Gulf Coast have a tendenchy to shut off the Gulf moisture, which does *not* preclude a possible snow event or two.

Colder and snowier. Up here in the Lake Effect Belt, last winter was a VERY quiet winter. We only had one or two snowfalls that were greater than a foot here at Fort Drum, along with only a few days where total snow on the ground was above a foot. Combined with that, and a summer that seemed a lot drier/warmer than usual, I can't help but think this winter is going to be brutal...Mother Nature balancing things out in the long run.

I am kind of in line with your thinking. I think a moderate El Nino will be in place this winter and that usually brings a wetter and colder pattern for the Southeast U.S.

They've seen more snow in the last 4 years I've been gone, than they did the entire 10 years of my life I had spent there prior to that! I'm not coming back this year either, so your snow chances are looking pretty good right now, IMO!!!

Just what I was thinking. If we can have one of these lows be well timed with a cold air mass then we are in for fun. Of course, I say that every year and it almost never works out. lol

Well it looks like the PDO is stronger and stronger kind of defeating the El Nino. So I am starting to think that there will be a trough in the west and a ridge in the east!
Going to be an interesting winter for sure A LOT to take into account this year!

Heavy winter snow seen for Eastern U.S.

Big snow events may return to the U.S. Northeast and mid-Atlantic as well as the central and southern Appalachians this winter, forecasters say.

Meanwhile, parts of the Midwest could fall short of normal snowfall again this year as it did in last winter's unusually warm condition,
