Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Winter 2018-2019

#1 Postby Weather150 » Mon Jun 25, 2018 3:13 pm

The Summer solstice has passed, and the days have already started to get shorter ever so slowly with each passing one. Before you know it will be Autumn..... and then Winter! Post your thoughts on what you think this winter will be like. :D

If we really do end up with a weak nino this year, we will likely end up with a cold and snowy winter, as that pattern seems to send a decent amount of coastal storms to our area, like we saw in 2014. I am a snow lover, so I may be a little biased, but I do think that there will be more snow than last year. :D

It will certainly be interesting to see.

I'm liking this cold pattern that we're in right now, with the highs in the low 50's and the lows around 40. I wonder if this pattern will persist into winter? It's been a while since we've had a nice cold fall, since the last few years have had summer heat persist into mid-late October. Just for fun, I was looking at the CMC long range and it shows 2 feet of snow for areas near NYC next week, it seems crazy, but it's just more proof that summer is officially gone for good :D

It's chilly in upper DE. Anyone else expecting winter as soon?

Looks like the NE (especially NY) may be getting an early snow on Thursday. My area in the Hudson Valley could be looking at 3-6 inches but we've been known to have 4-8 forecasted but then get nothing.

Insane storm last night, got 7.2” of snow on Long Island, and they were calling for under 1/2” earlier in the day. Absolute travel nightmare in and around NYC, it took nearly 4 hours just to go 10 miles!

Recieved 10 inches in the Hudson Valley while we were expected to get 4.

After this next wave of warmth tomorrow into Saturday, things should start to look much more winter like, and there should be a few shots of snow in the coming weeks. The NAM is coming into range and the New Year’s Eve system will probably be a bust. Next Wednesday could get a little interesting if some moisture gets thrown up our way, regardless, winter is definitely coming!

Yes, but it’s still pretty unclear for Sunday even though we are very close in time, the NAM switched from a slam dunk for us at 12z, to a complete miss at 18z, so I’m not sure what we’re getting.

Latest 18Z Operational GFS run late today shows the shortwave/storm system moving east out to sea on Sunday. This is the second consecutive day the 18Z GFS run shows this solution. This is looking like primarily a decent Virginia/ Washington D.C. winter precip event for right now. New England looks like it may miss this system as the 1035-1038 mb Polar High over Quebec/ New England by Sunday will likely suppress the storm system and keep it south and east of them.

Things can still change, so continue to monitor.

EDIT: 18Z GFS GV3 shows a more expansive snow precip field farther up the coast to about Cape Cod. It keeps the Low Pressure area a bit closer to the coast before pulling out to sea.

That is a significant difference on this 18Z run for Sunday between the Operational and the FV3.

The next few runs should give us a better idea as to whether New England will get a signigicant impact from this system.

12Z runs today of both Operational GFS and FV3 now in agreement showing storm system will miss New England to the south and east this weekend, as does EURO and NAM.

Besides the November system, we have not got more than a tenth of an inch of snow at any point this winter. It keeps getting cold and dry, then rains with a frontal system, then gets cold and dry again. I'm ready for spring!
