coastal flood watch for VA/NC beaches

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Tue Mar 09, 2004 3:28 pm

The national weather service in Wakefield, Virginia has just hoisted a coastal flood watch for the Virginia coast while the NWS in Morehead City issued a coastal flood watch for the North Carolina coastal waters/outer banks Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. The area of greatest impact will be from Chincoteague, Virginia southward through Virginia Beach including the Sandbridge section, which floods easily in a nor' easter let along a tropical storm or hurricane. The coastal flood watch extends further south to include the entire outer banks.

Northeast winds will increase to 40-45 knots with higher gusts possible along the Virginia and North Carolina coast late Wednesday into early Thursday. This combined with higher tides of 3-4 feet above normal levels will contribute to ocean overwash on coastal roads. Highway 12 is one area, which will be susceptible to ocean overwash Wednesday evening through Wednesday night.

In addition to coastal flooding, a gale warning is in effect. Sustained winds of 40-45 knots with gusts possibly to storm force will occur with this storm system along the VA and NC beaches. Areas inland from the coast will likely be breezy, but not as windy as the coastal areas.

In addition, Charlotte, NC is under a winter storm watch for 3-5 inches of snow while Ashville, NC is under a winter storm warning for 3-6 inches of snow tonight into Wednesday morning. Areas that see heavier and more persistent convective or thundersnow will see the heaviest snow amounts. Areas that have thundersnow could see wind gusts of 30-45 mph, heavy intense snow, and hail possible as well. A very cold and unstable airmass. Expect a wild night tonight for western North Carolina.

If only this storm would track closer to the coast, it might be interesting to me.

rainy and windy

Here in Newport News at about 2pm we have winds NNE to N gusting to 30 mph. Radar and Sattelite imagery shows a well defined gale center about 150 miles east southeast of Virginia Beach with bands of light to occasional moderate rain rotating onshore. All in all a miserable day here.
