November 12th Iowa tornados

#1 Postby jhamps10 » Fri Nov 11, 2005 10:35 pm

Thread for a potential severe weather outbreak for Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa on Saturday afternoon. I hope that this is not a repeat of last weekend, but they are thinking that this will start at about the same time as last weekends outbreak

It'll be a bust most likely.

If anything, it will be a squall line. Shear is too unidirectional, and cloudcover could be a problem tomorrow morning. However, if we get some insulation, the initial development could be some supercells, which would be more likely to produce tornadoes. Time will be running out though as they will congeal into a line quickly, and after dark the boundary layer cools.

Latest SWODY1 looks a little bit more optimistic for tornadoes.

Also note the shape of the SLGT area - eerily similar to the shape on April 21 of this year and May 4 in 2003. Both days proved fertile for chaser-friendly tornadoes.

Wow. Despite the marginal instability, several cyclic supercells have and are continuing to produce multiple tornadoes in Iowa. Major damage reported in Woodward. Tornado on the ground near Ames, where a football game is scheduled tonight and many tailgaters are camped out. Potentially ugly situation there, let's hope they have already taken shelter. More details to follow.

Missouri is now getting nailed . . . radar has several storms with big hail and a good many mesos, at least 4 so far. I'm surprised we haven't seen more tornado warnings go out.

Actually, I'm surprised that a TOR did come out for Newton Co., if you look at the storm the velocity data is pretty lackluster, couplet is weak at best. Expect that warning to be cancelled shortly if reflectivity and velocity presentation doesn't improve within the next few radar frames.

The main show is mostly over, and that was in Iowa.

A video of the tornado here: http://www.kcci.com/news/5311467/detail.html

I will post some pics of the tornado shortly.

I was a little surprised that that one had a warning, but a couple of the others didn't look too bad for 10mins or so. After the TVS showed up, the hook went downhill fast. Still some big hail in these storms, though.

And the winds being lackluster is certainly right, they are pretty meager.

Looks like it may go bust by the time it hits middle-TN,
tomorrow - no moisture to support it.

Its not expected to be a big weather maker for TN, a good chance for some rain and isolated thunderstorms, but not anything severe certainly.

I would keep an eye out for Monday Night and especially Tuesday. Indications of something much better there in terms of severe potential.

WOW

That is one of the most amazing videos I have EVER seen...I am speechless and can't stop replaying it. It hits so many emotions from the incredible closeness of the tornado, to the incredible confusion in the minutes after as that woman is being resuced to the family hugging and crying...

The above video is a MUST SEE...

TWC reporting 1 dead in the Stratford area.

Late EDIT: I want to emphasize that this is not official info and has not yet been reported in NWS, so there is a chance that this was a false report. I really don't consider TWC official anymore. :)

I'm pretty sure now that it has been confirmed.

Tornadoes Hit Iowa, Killing at Least One

By JAMES BELTRAN and MELANIE S. WELTE

STRATFORD, Iowa - One woman was found dead under a pile of fallen bricks, and another was pulled alive from the rubble a few feet away as searchers combed through two central Iowa communities ravaged by weekend tornadoes.

The twisters swept across two counties Saturday late afternoon, ripping up farms and damaging dozens of homes in the towns of Stratford and Woodward. At least one person was killed, two were injured and a natural gas leak forced hundreds of other residents from their homes overnight.

"Half the town's gone," Bob Smith said of the destruction in Stratford, a town of about 750 residents. He said he ran from his camper as the tornado touched down about 5 p.m.

In Woodward, 30 miles to the south, 20 to 40 homes were severely damaged when a tornado hit about half an hour later, Dallas County Sheriff Brian Gilbert said. Emergency crews searched house-to-house and hadn't found any victims by evening, he said.

The storm's winds also broke windows on the outskirts of Ames, where tornado sirens had already sent college football fans gathered for the Iowa State-Colorado game running for shelter.

"We dodged a bullet with the track of that storm," Iowa State University spokesman John McCarroll said. An hour later, thousands of fans would have been packed into the stadium for the game.

Tornadoes aren't common this late in the year. In Iowa, there have been 23 November tornadoes since 1950, according to National Weather Service records.

The conditions were right, though, with warm weather and a cold front barreling through, experts said. Last weekend, another tornado ripped through western Kentucky and Southwest Indiana, killing 22 people.

Weather Service meteorologist Gary Forster said there were at least three tracks to the storm Saturday. He said teams would be sent out Sunday to determine the number and intensity of the tornadoes.

In Woodward, MaDonna Rickels and her daughter headed for the basement as soon as they heard the tornado sirens Saturday evening. They later emerged to find much of their town of 1,200 residents in shambles.

"I saw houses that were destroyed," Rickels said. "All the houses south of where we live. We must have been right on the edge of it, two or three houses away from the worst of it."

In Stratford, Scott Bergman and his father began searching for survivors. They pulled one woman from the rubble of the same house where another was found dead, he said.

The victim was identified by her family as Lucille Runyan, 82. Her daughter-in-law said Runyan's son was also among the searchers who found her. Authorities said another woman was hospitalized with a broken hip, and another person had been taken to a hospital but no further information was available.

Someone please change the title of this thread to "November 12 Iowa tornadoes". Another severe weather outbreak is expected tomorrow and Tuesday so I'm hoping nobody gets this confused with that.

Anyway, YET ANOTHER AMAZING VIDEO. It was shot near Gilbert, IA by Simon Brewer from Stormgasm. You can see the transformers blowing and the numerous debris lifted into the air - as well as numerous buildings being destroyed.
