August 2, 2006 southern Ontario squall line

#1 Postby conestogo_flood » Thu Aug 03, 2006 11:44 am

I took these pictures of the massive squall line as it was fast approaching from the northwest. This is a message that was in the warning on this massive storm...

THIS IS A VERY HIGH IMPACT SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION..TAKE IMMEDIATE
PRECAUTIONS AS ADVISED. MOST OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO WILL BE IMPACTED
WITH DAMAGING WINDS AS THE SQUALL LINE TRACKS SOUTHEASTWARD.

..WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS GUSTING TO 120 KM/H AND NEARLY CONTINUOUS
LIGHTNING WITH A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS..

Anyhow, here are the pictures. By the time the storm had reached here, it was pitch black out, so the pictures wouldn't have turned out. I did take pictures though, but they got deleted. It was a very nasty storm. Definately one to remember. That day, we also had a tornado warning around 2pm.

Several tornado warnings were issued here yesterday, including Ottawa, Canada's capital.

This storm also affected from New York to Kansas so I thought I'd put it in USA Weather.

That was one amazing storm system last night. It didn't hit Toronto 'til around 9:30pm last night, and lasted between 45min- 1 hour.

Mike..those are amazing photos! Thanks for sharing!

I have to agree, just a amazing storm. I put my thoughts on the other topic but I will have a re-cap of everything that has happen in one post sometime. It's was a large weather event for Southern Ontario and even Eastern Ontario. I took pictures as well just 1 minute or less before the black clouds came roaring in. The squall line that went through Ontario though was epic IMO. It was around 700 miles long in total and that includes the line in the US.

conestogo_flood, I can't see any of those pictures.

So far, an F1 tornado has been confirmed in Combermere. The damage sounded more like F2/F3 or even F4. But, EC knows best...

Combermere is about 100 kms southeast of Ottawa, or maybe 30-50kms south of Algonquin Park. This is in eastern Ontario/Ottawa Valley.

100km? More like 150 MILES (250 km).

I agree, it looked a lot more like a strong F2/weak F3. I would have conservatively rated it a high-end F2 after looking at pictures.

I can see conestogo_flood's pictures now. Those are great!!

Is there a Wikipedia article on this weather event yet? I think it's more then big enough to warrant an article. Maybe CrazyC83 and I will start one. BTW, I don't have an account on there yet.

There should be a update on the "List of Canadian Tornadoes" article as well.

The Weather Network reports that Environment Canada has found that there were 6 tornadoes in total during this amazing storm. 2 of them were in Peterborough Ontario which ironically got hit the hardest during the July 17th thunderstorm line that went through Ontario.
