Cold thunderstorms-unusual?

#1 Postby Scott Patterson » Sun Mar 24, 2013 7:25 pm

We are having thunderstorms in the mountains, but what seems unusual is that it's happening during a spring cool snap. Check out the current conditions (6 PM March 24) at Twin Lakes, for example:

Has anyone seen thunderstorms when it is this cold? We actually have plenty of thunderstorms when it snows, but usually it is in the 20's and 30's when that happens. Most of the times in the mountains when it snows in July and August, for example, there is thunder.

We also can get thunder during snowstorms in winter and spring, but usually it's when it is realitively warm and before the cold air gets here. I can't remember any thunderstorms with temperatures near 0F. Anyone else?
