Fantastic Aurora Display!!!

#1 Postby john697 » Thu Nov 20, 2003 9:22 pm

In Western North Carolina tonight. A very bright blue and green display with a dim red background. Started around 6pm, and still some red visible as I type this (9:22). Almost directly overhead at times!

I saw some of the aurora in CHS earlier tonight as well ... (but too many darn lights around to really get a good view) .... BTW, the skies remain quite red ..

Yeah uh huh, and Iowa? Not a darn thing! *sniffle*

C'mon, the temps are already giving me the shaft for my birthday (nearly record high and beautiful today, 40's and cloudy tomorrow), couldn't I have at least caught a glimpse?

That's it! I'm moving!!

Wow, what a beautiful picture. I wonder if we could see them this far south, I didn't even look.

Yup Stormfury, thats what I saw....almost directly overhead at times.

Caught me by surprise....I was going to visit my daughter (who lives on top of a mountain), and noticed the glow in the sky. Watched for a couple of hours...very impressive show (mixed in with leftover meteors from the night before).

Awesome pic, SF. It's weird how it was visible in the southeast and up in Vermont, but I did not see anything in southeast PA - despite clear skies.

Down here too......

#10 Postby WeatherNole » Fri Nov 21, 2003 3:32 pm

It was also visible as far south as Thomasville, GA (about 30 miles north of Tallahassee). A viewer called it into to me last night. He saw a faint red cloud, off the NNW, about 20-30 degrees above the horizon. At first, I thought he was just another nut. I didn't know there were any CME's going on, but checked out good old http://www.spaceweather.com and confirmed it.

Our station is about halfway between Tallahassee and THomasvill, but I didn't see anything. :(

I saw them here just northwest of CHS as well last night ... A faint red glow with one glimmer of green intertwined within the veil ... Auroras are downright mesmerizing ...

That's what I get for retiring to bed, early? Rats!
The next few nights hold a promise for more,
though.

Thanks for that link, btw, WeatherNole!
