Obviously, you know nothing of the terrain around Los Angeles and San Diego or anything about orographic effects. When it rains 5 inches in downtown L.A. it means anywhere from 10-20 inches in the mountains that ring the basin. When you note that downtown was getting close to that much in 24 hours then you have some pretty hefty rains in the mountains. Until you have witnessed a Western US Flash Flood or mudslide in person you are not in any real position to comment on them. Finally, rain doesn't occur all that often in SoCA-at least not at this level and when you add fire stripped hillsides to the mix you have the makings of a real disaster.

Shady9, I do not know where you are coming from with your post, but it is totally unwarranted and an apparent attempt to start trouble on this board. Unless you have an idea what the weather is normally like in an area, I would suggest you not post something like that again. For that matter whether you do know the normal weather in a certain area I would suggest you not post like that again. Do you think the people that come on here from those areas post about how bad it is just for the hell of it? I am a moderator and a forecaster on this site and I have been around from the beginning and I can tell you the answer to my questions is no, they do not.

MIND YOUR HELM shady!!
I'm in the GOM quite a bit...I'll be keeping an eye out for you 'mate...
No big deal? Unreal...Perhaps when you've seen someone's life taken by ANY of the forces of nature, perhaps then, you will be "enlightened" and gain a sense of respect not only for the forces themselves, but also those affected by it!!

I live in Orange County, CA and I can da*n sure tell you it has not been a fun time out here recently. I had 7.45 inches of rain with this last storm, some of it coming down at the rate of 1.5 inches an hour. I saw mudslides, roof leaks, trees falling, power outages, hail, tornadoes, etc etc etc ... I could go on and on but you do have to realize that we here in this area are very not used to this type of weather and when it does hit we take it on the chin, so to speak...

Southern California terriain, and seasons make LOTS of rain a very big deal. After the rainy season,it gets warm and dry. Then in the fall, the Santa Ana winds pick up,and fires burn out of control because the rain provides plenty of brush for fuel in the fall. Then during the next rainy season, when all the brush has been burnt away,it causes mudslides. Normally LA gets 9 inches a year. This season they have received 33 inches.

You can do a search on Google to get a refresher on recent storm damage in California.

I don't know what the comment about Boise ID was all about, but if he's trying to say that it's not cold there, he needs to study Western US Climo big time. I spent three winters one state below and I saw -30F and I know ID has major cold. In fact, there's a running joke about ID's four seasons being early winter, mid winter, late winter and NEXT winter. Of course that's an exaggeration because ID can get quite hot in the Summer.

I think shady has stumbled upon a board where he knows nothing about the topic...weather!
I live in Riverside Co., in So Cal...and you don't really understand the dangers that heavy rains bring, until you live here, and experience it first hand. We are all hills and valleys...nothing in between, and when it rains, it floods our valleys, causes mudslides on our hills, which in many cases, closes down our roads, slides our residents homes off their foundation and down the hill they're built on... in this winter season alone, we've experienced snow in our desserts, places its never snowed before, hail, tornados, flooding, loss of life, a zillion major and minoe road closures, many many beautiful homes lost...so yes, we have a right to complain...its been devstating here...and YES we are looking forward to dry 70* days....but for different reasons then you think...we here in So Cal want our lives and our neighbors lives to return back to normal...we want our roads repaired and opened for our commutes, we want our hillsides to quit collapsing...we want our usually dry riverbeds to quit rushing into peoples homes and taking their lands...and lives...we want our huge boulders to stay put on their hillsides and quit falling into our homes, and killing our neighbors...
