The Eruption of Mt Peleé

#113 Postby Aslkahuna » Wed May 07, 2003 8:31 pm

in 1902 was actually relatively modest in terms of energy released and the death toll though very large is not the largest from a single eruption though close. It was the way the event happened that is significant. A single large pyroclastic flow roared down the mountain into the city of St Pierre shortly after 8am that day. All of the deaths occurred in a two minute period when the PF enveloped the entire city leveling it and setting it ablaze.

All the tornadoes were F0, F1 with the exception of the one in Polk county, which was an F2, so the tornado damage wasn't catastrophic. I remember the mobile homes being hardest hit in damage and fatalities, but there were many power outages, trees down, and incredible flooding.
It was known for years as "The May 8th Storm". My mom still has the issue of the Tampa Tribune from the following day.
BTW, the total count doesn't include all the funnel clouds spotted. :o

Thankfully not Tom, other than flooded streets and a few trees limbs. Didn't see any funnels myself. The closest one hit a couple miles away.
Heck, I may have a better chance of seeing one this month the way things are going!
