Drought or abnormally dry is still trending in mid July. Hard to believe as we are not getting any distinct
upper air patterns and the flow is weak or non existent.
Hopefully early next week that can be made up and it's not a broken forecast.

Looking decent so far. We had a good bit of rain today in that severe/extreme area. There was some on Sunday too, a bit more spotty.

I'd like to see Tampa hit 100 today or tomorrow...or ideally both. This is the lowest hanging record out there and it's been frustrating that we haven't ever reached the century club. Let's get it done

I just checked and saw that Tampa hit 98 in two Mays. Having it that hot in May while not hitting 100 even once during the summer seems counterintuitive. Also, when looking at all major FL stations’ hottest on record outside of the Keys (though Marathon hit 99 twice in July of 2023 during the marine heatwave), I can’t find any major station not hitting 100 other than St. Pete. Even Miami hit 100 in July of 1942. Most others hit it several times.

Edit for correction: I forgot to check Naples. Their alltime highest on record is 99, which was set in August of 1986. They just missed that but they tied their record hottest for July today.

Tampa's best chance to hit 100 from a climo perspective would be May or June before the rainy season begins in earnest. By late July it's very late for a such a pursuit as wet conditions, convection and clouds run interference. Normal is 91 but summer records here are often only a few degrees higher...which speaks to the steady state nature of our deep tropical climo in summer. We need anomalous high pressure to stymie convection and an offshore wind...both of which we have today and tomorrow. At noon it's 95. It's possible it happens today but 97-99 is the more likely outcome. Tampa has reached 99 on multiple occasions..the last of which was 2020 IIRC.

I see that Tampa was already 97 at 1PM today, a whopping 7 hotter than 24 hours earlier! Unlike yesterday at 1PM, winds today are from a hot inland NE direction. Skies are mostly sunny. The forecast is for upper 90s. Going to be close!

1. Here my highest has “only” been 98.7 so far. Ft. Pulaski just inland from Tybee Island hit 97 thanks to a hot light NW wind with the SST pushed by the heat up to 88!

2. Official Tampa report: highest ever recorded in July and ties the alltime record high! May be hottest (at least tied) FL major station today!

The wind has turned onshore here and that boundary is close to KTPA which is about 10 miles or so east of me. One would think that would shut down the chance for a 100 although KPIE has registered a 99 reading behind said seabreeze front. any way you slice it..incredible blowtorch heat. I do enjoy hot weather and extremes. I can recall awaiting an all time record low at KCAK in northeast ohio in January of 94...when it happened (-25f) i went out and hotboxed a cigarette with insufficient cold weather gear. it was exquisite. Today I'm a little more healthy. I'll settle for a bike ride.

Tampa also tied for the hottest in FL today! That seems kind of ironic.

Also, I had to correct my earlier post about Tampa previously being the only major FL station outside of the Keys and St. Pete not having ever hit 100 on record. I forgot Naples, whose hottest is still 99. They had 98 today.

At 10AM today, Tampa is 2 F cooler than 24 hours ago and the wind is light from the S instead of from the N. Both of those along with climo point to very little chance of another 100 F high there today.

Probably about a 96 or 97 today...which is still record warm territory. Yesterday was impressive on so many levels. Breaking a daily record by 3 and a monthly by 2 when records date for 135 years is wild.

Disappointing rainy season for South Florida this summer so far with long stretches of SE winds and hot, dry conditions. Most activity gets pushed over to SW Florida or the interior each day. We’ll see what August and September brings.

I think with this pattern of ESE winds the only thing that will help is a tropical wave or a minimal tropical storm coming in from the Bahamas at this point.

Yeah, we haven't even been getting many close calls, and I even live further inland. Looks like today we are getting pop-ups over the metro area though!
