Lake level rising-- how much water can the levees hold back and protect Belle Glade?

I have heard or read that the lake is ok as long the water level remains between 12 and 15 feet. Below 12 would be considered drought and above 15 the levees would be at risk of collapse.

Has there been any official word on how high they are going to allow the lake to get?

No, but I think they are re-thinking their strategy this summer as compared to last summer! I think they know we south floridians don't appreciate being punished for their bad decisions!!!

Thing is...one big slow hurricane next week and they would be too late to keep the lake below 15ft even if they started releasing now...it's not easy...24" in say 24 hours and then we have the sheet flow from the north to deal with after the rainfall overhead. Kinda scary...

Hmm looks to be close to 14' and then a serious storm/cane or 2 headed for the center of the state at this point..The lake is going to be filled to the brim.

Yeah, I was thinking about that last night/early this morning! I'm sure the ACoE is think-tanking on overtime this weekend about what to do!!!

This may be short-lived, but Lake Okeechobee is in rare form today. It has rebounded perfectly from the 2004 hurricanes and the record-breaking, two-year drought that began in 2006.

Good News for the lake for a change...I would be nice if it stayed that way.

Same article, but on one page.

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/ ... _0816.html

Under the corps' newly preferred water levels, the lake will reach about 15.5 feet in January and recede over the course of the dry season to 12.5 feet in June. That's essentially what happened in the past year.

I guess that answer the question. If it works out that way, that would be nice.
