Incredible weather events are unfolding in southern Ontario today, I was going to post something but a severe thunderstorm hit us hard and knocked out our power!! Wow, I would have never thought that would ever happen in mid-March!! More crazy storms are heading for us right now and I have a feeling they are going to be bad :D . There is even humidity like in March 2000.

Strangely enough, not much happened after yesterday morning's severe thunderstorms and no squall line at all occurred in Ontario. Clusters of storms throughout the day occurred but that's it. However, in the afternoon there were very powerful cells on lake Huron that for March were simply inconceivable. I even think one of them was a supercell on those cold waters! :) It died off before reaching land. Regardless, Michigan ended up getting most of the action with a mini-tornado outbreak (3?) that was unforeseen due to lack of wind shear. Amazing to see EF3 damage in Dexter MI in March. There is so much crazyness this week that a novel could be written on it...called March Madness :P .

No, mid-western Ontario.

I was about to sign off but I checked the forecast and my jaw hit the floor, now it shows basically 20ºC EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT 8 DAYS!!!!!!!  No words to describe that, just fantasy like. I can actually remember thinking how crazy it would be if every day was 20ºC like that but now that its actually forecast (TWN); I'm calling this unprecedented and historic. In fact, I highly doubt anyone alive today has ever seen a duration of that type of heat in March and I'm starting to wonder if it has ever happened to begin with. Just 1 20ºC day in March is a rare event. I'm still talking southern Ontario here but I'll be way more widespread than that. I was going to also comment earlier in the week about what the models were showing and how to deduce from that what temperatures might come of it.

I can now hear the birds chirping in early morning (4:30 am) like I do during the summer...

From weather.com...

Over 1,000 Record Highs This Week!
by Chris Dolce, weather.com Meteorologist

This has been a week of incredibly warm weather across much of the country. Over 1,400 record high temperatures have been broken or tied since Monday, and we're not done breaking records yet! Here's a quick roundup of the action so far:

Monday - According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), 138 daily high temperature records were tied or broken primarily in the Northeast and Midwest. This includes records set in New York City (71), Boston, Mass. (71) and Albany, N.Y. (69) that were more than 100 years old!

Tuesday - 218 daily high temperature records tied or broken in the Central and Northeast U.S, according to NCDC. Included were Concord, N.H. (71), Omaha, Neb. (81), Minneapolis, Minn. (67) and Sioux Falls, S.D. (79).

Wednesday - 457 daily high temperature records tied or broken, including St. Louis, Mo. (86), Chicago (81), Milwaukee, Wis. (78) and Paducah, Ky. (82), just to name a few. Minneapolis, Minn. (73) set a new record high on Wednesday for the fourth time in five days! Stunningly, Traverse City, Mich. shattered their earliest 80-degree reading on record, by 13 days; the old record was March 27, 1945.

Thursday - A whopping 593 locations equaled or exceeded their record highs across the Rockies, Plains, Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Chicago hit 81, the first instance of back-to-back 80s there in March on record. Madison, Wisc. tied its all-time March record of 82, breaking the March 15 record by 13 degrees. Record highs also fell in Atlanta and Norfolk, Va.

More records are likely through the weekend and into early next week. Below is a look at the record high temperature potential over the next two days.

Saturday's Record High Potential
If you've been stuck in an office building all week missing out on this record warm spell, St. Patrick's Day will be your lucky day. Pretty much every city that's been warm this week will still be warm Saturday. Once again, oodles of records are in jeopardy, as some 100 major cities will be near record territory!

Sunday's Record High Potential
Sunday, more record high temperatures are likely. This time, at least 80 major cities from the Midwest through the Southeast and parts of the Northeast are in the zone for record warmth.

Re: RECORD HIGHS MARCH 2012

#29 Postby Cyclenall » Sat Mar 17, 2012 2:53 am

Well, it was another awesome day of extremely warm weather. I'm finally starting to hear the media call this "unprecedented" and record shattering. What really hit it home was a display graphic The Weather Network put up yesterday of Toronto's forecasted daily highs to the records for each respective date. For the next 5 days, it showed each record being annihilated!!! Another tally would be to see how long the records are broken there on each consecutive day. The main years of competition are 1945, 1990, and 2000. As Suzanne L from TWN put it on her twitter feed; "Temperature records from Saskatchewan, Manitoba & Ontario are melting quicker than marble cheese in a microwave."

Another thing that should be monitored is the humidex values because I'm sure some records for that are being broken. Windsor ON on Thursday reached 24.4ºC but I heard the humidex reached an astonishing 29C humidex!! Some in-depth analysis needs to be done on this ridge and high pattern.

Thank you jinftl for posting that article, I had no idea it was that extreme. I don't think I have ever seen that many records broken in a week but someone needs to start comparing this to something!

tropicana wrote:i give up hahaha this is overwhelming to keep up, but i will try:-

If there is anything I can do to assist, let me know! An idea is to just post the most significant records that were broken (similar to what we do when there is a major tornado outbreak underway) that are like "warmest so early" and "All time March record", large cities, records that were broken that go back really far, records that were beat by massive margins, etc. Then link to a source that can account for the 100s of records that may have occurred on said day. I don't think over 500 records were posted on Thursday so I guess you can't keep up   . That is probably the longest list for Canadian records I have ever seen on these threads. There are probably more then that too.

Image

I looked at the 00z GFS model run and I like what I see. I'm probably not using the right stuff to see what the models show for future temperatures around my neck of the woods but I can sort of see where the high is located and how strong. This run continues to show relatively high pressure over the Great Lakes region and other areas without any significant pattern "shift" after 144 hours. I'm using the Tropical Cyclone Genesis Models page.

Its probably a phrase over used but it does apply to this one. Shattering records day after day over a large chunk of the nation.

this is quite exciting actually, i do it out of the love. I keep my own records anyways, so its just a matter of posting it on here. I can never include every single record, try as hard as i might, that would be a 24 hour job to try to decipher all the records at every single weather station across the US . Getting the canadian data is even harder, because most times, they dont post statements. Yet still i do it.
This is def a warm spell for the record books, not even necesarrily for the temperatures and how much above normal they are, that in itself is astonishing...but its also the length of this spell...and the time of the year. So many of these factors is already re-writing history books. Notice also how many of the records are not even being tied, they are just being surpassed.

Also not even included here, but I keep records as well, the numerous record high minimum temperatures being broken nightly. Warmer March nights have never occurred at many reporting sites.

According to TWC, we are now up to 1500 record high temp records being tied or set in just the last 7 days....has that ever happened before i wonder??? And I belive that is just U.S. data....records are being smashed daily in Canada too.

They are also calling for potentially up to 200 or more new records being set this weekend!!!

Same here, this is actually just as exciting as tracking a hurricane. It's maybe because its actually affecting me instead of looking in the distance.

Well that is what mainly what the most incredible aspect was the duration of the heat wave. I'm still hoping for those extreme spikes during these days that can tote 23ºC above average temperatures (right now it's between 14ºC-18ºC above average). We're probably going to start to do that soon.

tropicana wrote:Also not even included here, but I keep records as well, the numerous record high minimum temperatures being broken nightly. Warmer March nights have never occurred at many reporting sites.

I'm keeping track of how warm the nights are as well and those are just as amazing as some of the daytime highs. All winter it was like that as well.

So far today I heard something odd...Toronto struggled to reach even 10ºC because of heavy clouds? How is this possible when literally just 1.5 hours away its 22ºC with a humidex of 28ºC!? I still don't believe it.

This forecast is for Winnipeg, Manitoba for tomorrow. Yes, that is 28ºC air temperature with the humidex at 31C!!!!!! Mind = Blown. If that verifies, it will be one of the most insane temperature readings ever in Canadian history and will be equal to March 8, 2000 in Windsor. This will be Winnipeg's March 8, 2000 and I'm not sure but if it actually gets up to 30ºC air temperature tomorrow I think it will be the earliest 30ºC so far in Canada (ever) (just think, beating Windsor ON by weeks when it's way higher in latitude!!! ). I'll look at the Almanac for that city later to see more info.

As per usual with any changes in nature the wildlife are aware of it long before us stupid humans.

This shows the normal time that Canada geese will show up in my area

That would be around May 20th. This year it is this weekend that the main migrating flocks are currently flying overhead and a number already touched down a week ago.

Ottawa was in the chill for a couple days but starting tomorrow EC has us being over 20 till Thursday with a 26 on Wednesday which is within a hair of marches all time record. On average we have a 20 Deg march day in Ottawa once every five years so a stretch like that is truly stunning.

Check Montreal's temperatures this winter compared to Burlington, Vermont for example... Both cities have the same climate.

We've been affected by fog in the last few days... 12.9C was the mildest it has been this March in Montreal.

Down to the Vermont/Quebec border (40 minutes drive), the temperature has been as high as 16.9C. Ottawa has been above 15C as well.

We're just starting to feel the warmth...

This is the almanac data for Winnipeg, Manitoba Richardson International Airport and St Johns College (combined data set going from 1872-2008) for March 18:

Average Maximum Temperature -0.7 °C
Average Minimum Temperature -10.5 °C
Monthly Frequency of Precipitation 29 %
Highest Temperature (1872-1938) 14.4 ºC 1910 (8.8 °C 2000 for Airport station)
Lowest Temperature (1872-1938) -33.3 ºC 1883 (-25.6 °C 1944 for Airport station)
Greatest Precipitation (1872-1938) 20.3 mm 1922 (10.0 mm 2007 for Airport station)
Greatest Rainfall (1938-2007) 5.0 mm 2007
Greatest Snowfall (1872-1938) 20.3 cm 1922 (10.8 cm 1996 for Airport station)
Most Snow on the Ground (1955-2002) 76.0 cm 1956

We have a pretty large data set here, 140 years! It shows that if it does get to 28ºC air temperature today that it will be nearly 29ºC or 82.4ºF above average (never seen that...not even close) and obliterate the record by a whopping 13.6ºC to 19.2ºC (depending on the station). Remember, this is from 140 years of data and it would beat the previous record from 102 years ago. It would be cool to see it reach 30ºC and then it would beat that even further and I would say its more then a once in a 140 year event, maybe 500+ year event. If you take the record high that could occur today and the record low then you have a range for March 18 of 61.3ºC or 142.3ºF difference.

To tropicana, on Global News they reported that Ontario broke 22 records yesterday (March 17) so there are 12 more to be added to the list at least.

But that's just a 4ºC difference while this is a 12ºC difference. I don't think heavy clouds and fog make that big of a change on the local climate there. And I was looking forward to seeing a long streak of Toronto breaking records in a row :x :( .
