Large synoptic-scale wind event will precede, and follow the line of thunderstorms moving thru the Allegheny county area attm. The strongest of your winds should occur in the next 5 to 10 minutes (as of 120pm ET) and will probably be very short-lived but capable of knocking down trees and powerlines, which has already happened. The SPC has a large portion of NY/PA area under a 5% tornado risk, which is quite high for this time of year. Here in SW Conn I'm expecting those strong winds to really ramp up later in the day with the possibility of some severe weather come evening. Stay safe.

Had the line go through already. Had very strong winds and about 5 minutes of hail. Largest hailstone that I observed was about a pea size. It started to accumulate on the ground. Now the sun is breaking through again and you can definately tell the air has changed. SPC has changed the severe thunderstorm watch over to a tornado watch. I doubt we have anymore severe weather today though.

WFIE and WEHT out of Evansville are streaming coverage. Both have been doing a great job so far...

Praying hard for those directly affected. Obviously a very violent and destructive tornado.

Hope Donna is just without power. If that is it if I know her she is helping all she can with the resuce effort.

everyone there is saying the damage looks Andrew like since this was an F3 maybe an F4 but certainly not an F5 or otherwise that entire mobile home park would just have slabs

What a tragic event. The tornado had to have been at least an F4 by the damage I've seen on tv.

The coverage I have seen indicates F3-F4 damage. Most appears to be F3. Anyway we look at it it is horribly tragic!

I'd agree with that. I haven't seen much video of it but I was thinking at least T5 or 6 if the damage I saw was trailer parks. If they were proper houses there may be some T7 damage in there as well. :(

Edit - Better add a link so you understand the scale we use over here. http://www.torro.org.uk/TORRO/severeweather/tscale.php

Just curious...is Torro the kind of scale that they use in all of Europe?

Based on the damage video I've seen in the area, the rating will likely be an upper-end F3 with winds approaching 200mph. As is usually the case, the high death toll isn't a good indication of the strength of the tornado because more than 85% of the fatalities occurred in a mobile home park at 200am.

I hope that everyone can get their feet back on the ground quickly and that the recovery process is a speedy one.

Actually, most of the damage looks strong F2-weak F3. Remember that mobile homes cannot even withstand F1 winds. A weak F2 could shred a mobile home to pieces. Once you get to F4 mobile homes go into the air and then are dropped over half a mile away. I don't see that, instead I see areas where there are more damage then other areas. This indicates that the tornado was most likely a multiple vortex tornado. Chances are that the most mobile homes actually received only weak F2 damage, and only some that received stronger damage, since there are mobile homes nearby the ones that are decimated that are still intact. Well-built structures look mostly intact as well. Though other areas could've received worse damage, from pictures I have seen, the damage looks like an F2. If I used the Torro scale it would be T4 or T5.

Yes, although it is officially known as the International T-scale rather than the TORRO scale anymore. I had to look up the F scale to compare to what I know. (The T-scale is better as far as I'm concerned but this isn't the place to discuss that....)

Re: The post above. I've done a SI on a T4/5 and this looks worse although I couldn't really tell from the tv images what the buildings were. Trailer parks will be weaker though than proper builidngs as has been pointed out on one of the UK weather forums.

Omgosh! I hadn't seen news all day until just a few minutes ago. At least 22 dead and 230 injured. The damage looks horrible. My thoughts go out to Donna...praying she is ok and her home spared! Also weatherfreak and everyone else affected. So much devastation lately...it's really unbearable to see the footage and hear about the deaths. There really aren't words...

I'm not really concerned if it's an F3 or F4 - lives are turned upside down and people have died. That's devastating to me. :(

Btw wxmann_91, F1 winds are 73-112mph and some mobile homes are built stronger than others. At least down here, there are areas where people live and if you have a mobile home, it has to have a certain code, one constructed to withstand cat2 winds (96-110mph) so I would assume some mobile homes can withstand F1 damage. (although likely not older ones)

IN has experienced some incredible November tornado outbreaks the last 5-10 years. Would be interesting to see if there is some climatic cycle in these second season outbreaks so far north.

This is really breaking my heart today. I always check the news on the web as soon as I wake up, and I'm sure you can imagine my horror upon reading the headline "17 dead, 200 injured by tornado near IN/KY border" - I grew up down there, and my family still lives near the border, but about an hour ENE of last night's storm. My heart literally sank and I thought I was gonna puke - those feelings really didn't subside when I saw my family was ok. Ugh - tragic day indeed.
