woohoooo! Key West finally hits 80F! the first time in the 80s at the airport since January 30!!

yayayayya

-justin-

actually, the high at Key West today was 79F, not 80F so the wait continues for the first 80F in 39 days.

HIGH in Tampa officially 82F

When will this dry pattern end. Arizona gets more rainfall than Florida these days. Texas is finally getting drought relief over the next 4 days. This upper level high has us down in the upper 50's at night and the low to mid 80's during the day.I suspect the reason why its getting cooler at night is low humidity and the moisture content in the soil isn't there to trap in the heat, a pattern you would see in a desert.Lake O is dropping 3" a week and this La Nina pattern is erasing what Fay did for us last year. Ok I'm done have a good day.

Amazingly enough, parts of Florida have seen less rainfall year to date than other typically ‘dry’ locations.

Granted, it is the ‘dry season’ in Florida, but as shown below, rainfall amounts are still running only a fraction of averages for the year to date (all data is from 1/1/09 – 3/10/09)

Year to Date Rainfall:
Miami 0.46” (average ytd = 4.75”)
Fort Lauderdale 0.26” (average ytd= 6.51”)
Naples 0.47” (average ytd = 4.89”)

By comparison, year to date rainfall totals:
Los Angeles 4.16”
San Diego 2.17”
Las Vegas 0.82”
Houston 2.01”
Dallas 2.06”

(all data from NWS office Climate Summary for cities shown)

In the sun, it feels like summer, without the humidity

The seabreeze is pleasant!

So close....yet so far away...Key West may not hit 80 in the next week...but before anyone breaks out the parka and gloves if they are headed down that way, the low may not fall much below 70 in the next week either.

Key West is one of the few locations in the u.s. that has less than a 10 degree spread between avg daily high and avg daily low for most of the year...annually, avg high is 82.7F and avg low is 73.0F.

The weather is very 'normal' right now...avg March high/low is 79/69. This is interesting...all-time record high for March is 88 deg!!! Amazing that there is a 9 degree spread between the avg high and the all-time monthly high temp....talk about consistent climate.

Severe Drought conditions continue to expand..

Image

Excerpt from U.S. Drought Monitor report issued along with the map above:

Continued drier-than-average conditions in Florida resulted in expansion of severe drought (D2) in west-central Florida to the east coast and in southern Florida. Continued drying occurred through south and southeast Florida with increases in the extent of severe drought (D2) there as well. Additionally, wildfires are being reported in the area. In southern Florida, Lake Okeechobee continues to fall (12.56 feet on March 8). If precipitation does not increase, further degradation may be necessary in this area in the coming weeks.

Key West WFO hit 80F but the airport only made it to 78F today.

Key West's temps are influenced greatly by the water temperature surrounding the island...temps right now are in the mid-70s which makes it tough to get temps much above or below that level. Water temps will continue to rise and once we hit May and especially June, the water gets to the mid-80's....which explains why the average high temp rarely gets above 90 and the low temp rarely falls below 80.

LOL...watch that wind shift percent, it might fizzle to 10%....with a forecast for clear skies followed by clear skies!

It is crazy that we have seen many fronts last fall and this winter....very few (if any) were ushered in by thunderstorms or even rain (at least in south florida)....just a steady pumping in of drier and drier air. Be curious to learn why the dynamics have not been there to create enough instability to get storms and rain....even though there have been some very strong fronts.

NWS Tampa Bay not sounding too impressed with the front next week...

AS PREVIOUS DISCUSSIONS HAVE NOTED THE TIMING OF THE FRONT AND
ASSOCIATED PRECIPITATION REMAINS VARIABLE AND HAVE NOW SLID THE
FRONT AND SHOWERS...JUST A SLIGHT CHANCE...BACK TO TUESDAY
.
TEMPERATURES WILL RUN ABOVE AVERAGE BY 3 TO 5 DEGREES UNTIL THE
FRONT AND HIGH PRESSURE BEHIND IT USHERS IN SOME COOLER AND DRIER
AIR WITH READINGS BACK NEAR AVERAGE LATER TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY

Water temps around the entire state are starting to climb....pretty rapidly in places even...around the entire peninsula (and the rest of the Gulf as well)

Are you kidding me? Seriously this weather is wonderous!! I love it! I know, I know we need the rain, blah, blah, blah.
Which I know can be serious with the fire threats, but I am loving it. Don't have to worry about bringing anything in
from outside, can lay out all day and not break too big of a sweat and get killer sun. It will come soon enough
unfortunately, we will be begging for it to stop raining soon enough. I just hope it doesn't get anything like '98.
