@TxStormChasers: "Long track #tornado entering Chambers County, AL. It has already produced major damage. http://texasstormchasers.com/?p=6331 #alwx."

-----

It would appear that this tornado has tracked across a good portion of Alabama tonight (provided it hasn't lifted, touched back down).

Tight couplet still exists on the amazingly long long-track tornadic storm across central Alabama.

It started earlier tonight just to the south/east of Demopolis and is about to exit near LaGrange, Georgia.

As per Texas Storm Chasers on their Facebook page:

"A major, long-track tornado continues at this late hour across East Alabama. This tornado has caused significant damage in several locations across Central and Eastern Alabama. If there is good news, this is the only storm remaining producing a tornado. Sadly, it appears this has been a major, long-track tornado. We won't have a full idea on the full scope of damage until sunlight tomorrow, but it appears several communities have been impacted."

On a historic day of tornadic weather across the Mid-South, the South, and the Midwest, this would appear to be the very last active tornado warning of the day (the one in eastern Alabama about to move into western Georgia).

And it appears to have weakened per NWS reports, turning into just a potential radar indicated storm.

What a horrific, historic day of early March tornado strikes across the country.

Good night everyone. God speed and heart-felt prayers to those affected.

@juliannamkh: "Tornado has exited the state after having been on the ground for 3+ hours. #alwx."

-----

If that turns out to actually be the case - a tornado that spent three-plus hours on the ground - can't help but believe that daylight will reveal serious to severe damage in central Alabama.

Wasn't able to track this as it happened since I was at work most of the day, but I can't believe an outbreak like this happened in early March. :( Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do before bed.

Your concern was 100% on the spot. Half your town was destroyed. I can't imagine what kind of day you must have had.

If you go back and look at the first page, most of us knew something was different about this one and had that "feeling". Back all the way to one week ago tonight I thought something nasty might come of these two weather systems and boy did they ever.

There was non-stop tornado warnings for 14.5 hours straight. It started at 10:18 am EDT and ended at 1:03 am EDT. This epic and historic tornado outbreak is in the top 3 most memorable for me, tracking it for like 16 hours! I'm still amazed at how early it all started.

I'll close with these famous words from Walter Cronkite:

And that's the way it was...

The potential for severe weather has waned for now, but will be reinvigorated in the early morning hours from SE LA to eastern NC and down into central Florida. The main threats are for isolated tornadoes and flooding rains. In the area delineated in light green, there is a slight risk of flooding in the central FL panhandle and big bend areas as well as across southern Georgia. These areas should expect 2-4 inches of rain within the next 24 hours. Flood watches have been posted is the majority of this area. In the darker green area, localized areas may see upwards of 6" of rain. Flood warnings may been needed when storms begin to fire over this area.

At the very least, the last few months should dictate a change in school construction codes. There should be safe areas built in to every one.

I wanted to pop on this morning before having to get ready and leave. I will be away from the computer for the majority of today and will miss the horrific stories as they unfold with the coming of daylight. I pray that everyone and their family and friends are safe. I am dreading the final counts.
