What an insane day

Wow, huge spike :( . That's almost double now. This is going over 100 folks. These are my last thoughts of May 20, 2013...a day that will be remembered and one that will go down in infamy:

TWN here in Canada is actually continuously putting up this mini graphic of the gate-to-gate winds from the twister saying around 320 km/h or near that. I've never seen TWN or any other TV broadcast start to use that but it seems the mets over there urged them to use it. They didn't bother explaining what g2g means. I approve of it and seems to be a good decision but a lot of other things are not quite "well" over there I must say.

That supercell in TX stayed in the same spot forever it seems, imagine a tornado with that? It would be nearly stationary. The flash flooding in the worst spot probably would be incredible.

Another date and image I just found that was sort of similar to yesterday was May 19 2010, there was a tornado warning in almost the exact spot that had this Moore tornado. There were more TOR warnings to the north though and nothing like what took place yesterday occurred then. I just stumbled on it and was amazed.

The preliminary rating that the NWS uses in these events actually annoy me a lot. Saying this was an EF4 when everyone is thinking EF5 for sure, they should just not give anything until the final rating. This happened with Joplin and when the EF5 rating does come out, all the non-weather folk have to learn the upgrade. Has the NWS ever given a prelim EF5 rating ever before? (I'm including F5's too here) If there was ever an event that warranted it...

I think they are nervous about giving out that rating but this tornado I am afraid will have a low survival rate. :(

Wow, wow, wow. If you haven't seen the tornado in its entirety, go over to this thread and watch the YouTube video featuring KFOR TV met Mike Morgan and helicopter pilot John Welsh as they spend 30 minutes tracking the tornado through Moore.

Insane footage from the air and from the ground. Amazing stuff.

The video coming out of this is insane but also tragic. That tornado has to be one of the most violent one's I have ever seen.

I watched the time lapse of this earlier on. Watching the tornado go from a faily innoculous rope tornado to a mile-wide mass murderer was scary.

Check out this .gif and how the cell from the southwest intensified the storm. This is a fascinating radar loop. Posted by JB last night

The OFFICIAL death toll is only 51 from what I can gather. Some late night news reports jumped on the figure of 91 around midnight when they took a medical examiner spokesperson's statement of 51 dead and "another 40 fatalities expected" to equal 91.

Dave Watson, former Nashville musician and TV outdoors show host, on the death toll discrepancy this morning:

"@davewatsontv: Media is so messed up. I'm watching ABC news right now. They say 51 dead in OK. Other networks say 90. Still, prayers."

If the final death toll does come in around the 51 figure where it stands now, then that's truly remarkable.

The damage from yesterday's tornado is every bit as extensive and catastrophic as it was in Joplin. Both tornadoes were ostensibly the same size and strength and both had tracks around 20 miles in length. Moore's population is 41,000 or so and Joplin's is around 50,000.

The difference? Lead warning time, local mets on TV that excel in getting the word out, decisive and quick action by people in the tornado's path, and the numerous tornado shelters in the community.

Dallas/Fort Worth sitting at pretty much exactly the same edge of the MDT risk zone as Oklahoma City yesterday. I don't like it.

Seems to be some question about the casualty numbers. Lots of discrepancies in various reports. Probably best not to quote them too much right now until they get firmed up in a few days.

Leftover boundaries played a roll in yesterday's tornados storms. A few of those hanging around this morning too.

Or maybe not?

"@koconews: Medical examiner: 24 of those killed have been identified, however, the total number of those dead after Monday's tornado remains unclear."

And even more "clarification"?

@dallasnews: Oklahoma Medical Examiner lowers tornado death toll to 24. Spokeswoman: Some victims counted twice in early chaos. http://t.co/WTl34Ia3gg

Still a horrible tragedy to say the least, but that at least shows a BIT of hope...
