I say yes. Those poor drunken college students risk hypothermia in the Gulf waters, colder than they've been all year.


I never made it to South Padre during Spring Break. I was one of those poor kids who had to work his way through college, and missed out on all the drunken depravity. You'd have to be drunk to go wading into sub-70ºF water, that is for sure!

Some Spring Breaks occur before spring even starts. Go figure.

Our Spring Break is still over 2 weeks away- April 14th-18th. It seems like it will never get here! All of the other schools here are either currently on break or have already had their break. But, yeah, the weather should (hopefully) be warmer then.

I just feel sorry for all the Minnesota and Michigan and Wisconsin kids who risk daytime highs in the 60sF, with the beach water temps below 70ºF, at South Padre and Galveston.


Lots of low clouds today, and again tomorrow, but for Spring Breakers this week, temps around 80ºF here, and a bit warmer in the Valley, should be near perfect.

Spring Break should be tied to Easter IMO. Also, I think Tornado Alley would be a better place for Spring Break (from a weather perspective) than the beach...they get a chance to experience REAL weather, learn things no matter what AND they don't get involved in the insane acts!

Students don't care if the water's cold...just as long as the beer's cold! And they don't want to learn a thing, they're taking a break from learning.

March weather in Fort Lauderdale...the original Spring Break mecca...is ideal...generally sunny with temps in the 70s and 80s and water temps well into the 70s.

There was a concerted effort on the part of local officials to veer away from attracting the Spring Break crowd here in the 1980's and 1990's. The effort to move towards a more upscale tourist market, along with much higher hotel rates here than in places like Panama City, has moved the bulk of Spring Breakers north to less tropical locations during the month of March.

Spring break for me was just to relax and chill.

Absolutely true...

and all the drinking they do sure warms the body up!!!

Well, my nephew just returned from Spring Break at Orange Beach and was most displeased with the cold temps earlier this week. We went down into the 30's early in the week. It's nice and warm now (mid-70's), but he said the school should give them 2 more days off to make up for the "ruined" ones! He didn't say anything about trying to go in the water. Most of us here wait until May for that as we like our swimming water to be like a bathtub! But, I guess y'all are correct-- it is too early (at least per my nephew).
(Note: He attends private school here and most of the private schools have Easter Break. All of us public school folks have 2 more weeks of school to go before we get a break!)

Ack, the Gulf is getting even colder.

Poor Spring Breakers. Nothing to do but drink, make bad decisions, and risk arrest.

I talked with my youngest son who currently is enjoying Gulf Shores this weekend. He said the water is cool but smimable. Sorry but I don't go in the water till June when it has had a chance to warm up.....MGC

A swimmer could die of hypotermia in minutes in the icy waters offshore Texas.






Sad, sad way, to end Spring Break, dead of hypothermia.

I don't know how many colleges still have Spring Break, but the water at South Party Island is now at least tolerable, over 70ºF.
