A heads up to any mariners that like to go boating in the Near Shore forecast zones of MHX (Newport, NC NWS WFO) or anyone who may have questions, concerns, or comments about these proposed changes.

In an effort to improve the dissemination of the near shore coastal marine forecast on NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, the National Weather Service Office in Newport proposes to decrease the length of the near shore coastal marine forecasts from 5 days to 2 days.

This proposal was the result of feedback obtained from a local marine advisory council, consisting of a diverse group of users of our marine forecasts. This change will significantly shorten our broadcast cycle, while still making available the most important part of the coastal marine forecast to mariners. The shorter cycle will allow the forecast to play more often, and make it easier to pick out the information most important to the mariner. The full forecast will still be available on the Newport National Weather Service web page at http://www.weather.gov/mhx and on the automated forecast phone recording line, which is available by dialing 252-223-5737.

If you have any questions or concerns about this proposed change, please contact Richard Bandy at the National Weather Service Office in Newport by May 9th at 252-223-5122 extension 222 or email at richard.bandy@noaa.gov. This change is planned to be implemented in mid-May.
