East Coast trough to start digging in

note the first low that passed thru S New England is rounding the canadian maritimes with a pressure equivilant to a major hurricane (953 mb!)

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/nwatl/flash-ir2.html

appears there are three more shortwaves rotating thru with the liklihood of at least two coastal low's developing ...some with the potential of RECORD EARLY SEASON SNOWS in Particularly Pennsylvania.....where it is seemingly unprecedented for a storm this early to drop 2-6 inches (PLUS?) of heavy pasty snow........ also (the little piece of energy that rotated thru the mid atlantic this afternoon ) actually dropped a coating of snow around 3000 ft in garrett county MD around 3-4pm) .

Now that i'm living a tad NW of boston i am excited to see what becomes of these lows ....it would appear that there is still enough of the forecast for either low still "up in the air" that a couple inches of slop could fall 40 miles to my west at Mt. wachusett....at least according to the latest models identifying a small chance of 4 plus inch snows from the berkshires thru worcester county up to the monadanocks....the key appears to be wether the heavier precipitation can get into the area where the boundry layer is cold enough......if it does i will drive to the summit and take pics.

I saw the first flurries in the air :cold: They melted before touching the ground but it's still pretty early.

first flakes = awesome

got down to 28 last nite.....still 35 degrees in burlington , MA (MBY)......latest intellicast national radar looks straight OUT OF WINTER......this is now looking likely to BE A UNPRECEDENTED event for moderate to high elevation in PA.......A foot of snow PLUS is not out of the question above 2000ft.....also Southern NY/NW NJ above 1000 ft could get a half foot as well....same goes for NW CT this WILL get really interesting...VA/WV/MD mountain will also have a shot of getting nice accumulations in MID OCTOBER..........outside of a couple storms that effected new england couldn't find ANYTHING that compares to this storm in the record books....especially for PENNSYlvania.

The cold high in SE canada is funneling in cold dry air to help the Boundary Layer cool....there are reports of light snow mixing in Southern CT....at lower elevations.

Throw out climo for a second.....take a look at the cold air that is established ....and tell me why elevations over 2000ft in PA can't get 18 inches?

extremely cold air for october over Pennsylvania-New england

it is snowing in Danbury CT at noon on oct 15! read .......the cold high is also causing what appears to be a very sharp cut off from moderate precip to dry air .....it appears this is setting up near the CT/MA border........and i think the best snow in new england may be in Connecticut above (who knows 500....1000 ft?) ........depending on how the coastal sets up there could be a decent nose of precip that moves NE over worecester county tonite and could bring decent totals in interior central mass .....

I think somewhere in PA will see 8-10 inches by early fri am.....and possibly a second dose a day later.....i would believe somewhere in NE PA SE interior NY could see a foot tonite from this storm...amazing

Ok so i wanted to see some snow tonite.....so i drove with the gf about 35 miles to the WSW (from burlington, MA) to Worcester....I was trying to get the elevation maps up while driving but the ipod was not co-operating so i decided to drive to the airport....on the way the clouds gave way to light rain and then light snow when we got about 400 feet or so elevation and further inland......when we arrived at airport parking lot ( i knew it was 1000ft elevation) the cars were covered in about a half/inch of the white stuff. (1230 am)...it was the first time i saw snow falling in about 9 years! i took some pics made some snowballs even was about to try and roll a snow man but there was just not enough snow sticking to the ground there.....i will put a pick or two up tommorrow......and now looking at the worcester elevation maps i can see that i could have driven another mile or so and gone up to about 1300 feet elevation....so now i know.

wow what a cold airmass for october....this morning as the storm passed to our SE.....a change to snow occured and whitened the ground....it was even flurrying as the precip died off (instead of changing to drizzle) which shows just hold cold the air aloft is..........there is even a STRONG band of ocean effect precip coming off atlantic ocean /boston harbor which coated the ground on top of 600 ft plus blue hill observatory cam in milton mass....

possibility for a second coastal to close off sometime sat. nite and perhaps deliver another round of storminess....i will be going to the highest of the worcester hills (1250 ft') for that one if necessary for some change to snow/accum......w/ pics.

35.5 degrees at 930 am...
