This is just MY opinion, but here is what I think were the top 10 in the US. It is tougher this year since there were far fewer blockbuster events than in 2008 (at least 4 events then could easily be #1 in 2009), and the tropics are noticeably absent.

1 - January ice storm in the Ohio Valley

2 - Summer chill in most of the US east of the Rockies

3 - September floods in Georgia

4 - March/April floods in the Red River region

5 - May 8 derecho in the Midwest

6 - December 19 blizzard in the Mid-Atlantic

7 - April 10 tornado outbreak in the Southeast

8 - Massive spring and summer drought in Texas

9 - February 10 tornadoes in Oklahoma, especially Lone Grove

10 - Christmas blizzard in the Plains and Midwest

In the US, here is my top 10 of the decade, not surprisingly the tropics dominated:

1 - Hurricane Katrina, 2005 (a no-brainer!!!)

2 - Massive droughts, 2006-07

3 - Hurricane Ike, 2008

4 - June Midwest flooding, 2008

5 - Hurricane Rita, 2005

6 - Super Tuesday tornado outbreak, 2008

7 - Hurricane Wilma, 2005

8 - Hurricane Charley, 2004

9 - Tropical Storm Allison, 2001

10 - California wildfires, 2003

Honorable mentions: Summer 2002 drought, Veterans Day weekend tornado outbreak 2002, May tornado spree 2003, Memphis derecho 2003, Hurricane Isabel, Hurricane Frances, Hurricane Ivan, Hurricane Jeanne, Christmas snow in the South 2004, Hurricane Dennis, Evansville tornado 2005, Northeast blizzard 2006, Heat wave and derechos 2006, Buffalo snow October 2006, Midwest ice storms 2007, Southeast tornadoes March 2007, Northeast flooding 2006, Greensburg tornado 2007, Midwest summer flooding 2007, California wildfires 2007, May/June tornado sprees 2008, Hurricane Gustav, Northeast ice storm 2008, Ohio Valley ice storm 2009

I like the list. Personally, I would put Ike at number 2 since it did a lot of damage, third after Katrina and Andrew.

I thought about that, but decided on the drought at #2 due to its wide-reaching economic losses and duration.

Of the decade list - 6 were tropical cyclones, 1 was a severe weather event, 1 was an extreme seasonal pattern, 1 was a flood event and 1 was a non-precipitation event. There were no winter weather events. (There could have been more tropical cyclones had the list been longer, since they represented many of the honorable mentions as well)

Of the annual list - 3 were severe weather events, 3 were winter weather events, 2 were extreme seasonal patterns and 2 were flood events. There were no tropical cyclones or non-precipitation events.

Good point. Droughts do have have a huge impact. We were hit by them recently.

TWC had the following for the decade:

1 - Hurricane Katrina, 2005

2 - Greensburg tornado, 2007 (wasn't even in my top 10)

3 - Hurricane Ike, 2008

4 - June Midwest flooding, 2008

5 - Super Tuesday tornado outbreak, 2008

#2 were the obvious differences - I had the drought, they had Greensburg, the rest were fairly similar.

Notice that three of the top 5 events are in 2008. I am surprised that the 2007 Greensburg Tornado is in the top 5. It did destroy Greensburg.

Looks like there wasn't any weather between 2000-2005. Maybe we should do ten from 2000-2004 and ten from 2005-2009?

TS Allison happened in 2001 and I think it is one the top weather events of the decade.
