31 July 2010 Last updated at 09:10 ET Help A hailstone weighing almost a kilo  that fell in the state of South Dakota has been confirmed as the largest ever recovered in the USA.

According to the National Weather Service, the hailstone that landed in the town of Vivian eclipsed previous record-setters in Nebraska in 2003 and Kansas in 1970.

David Campanale reports.

Picture of it can been seen here .......... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-10827538

Why the heck is no one talking about this??? This is a incredible meteorological record that has broken and I didn't even find out until now! Now I know basketball sized hail really does exist. Some sick weather events are taking place and oddly enough half of them are being ignored (Pakistan floods, this, and some strong tornadoes in foreign countries).

The scary thing is that hailstone must have been even larger when it fell. Who knows how long it took for the weather to calm down enough for someone to go outside, for that person to discover the hailstone, and to carry it inside and put it in the freezer (taking more time to empty out the freezer to make room! ) .... Imagine how much it melted during that time!
