Got a pretty serious situation regarding a tornado on the ground in some populated areas of Southern Massachusetts. Don't know about you, but this looks like a debris ball.

That was DEFINITELY a debris ball. Haven't seen anything like that in New England in many years.

The intensities are NOT (forgot that previously) as high as the Joplin tornado. What you do have though, is a pretty decent structured storm dropping a tornado in an area where tornadoes are pretty rare and with some pretty good population. That can still cause some damage and spin things up into a debris ball.

Intense tornado moved across the toll plaza at I-84 near Sturbridge, MA.

Still, even an EF3 in that region would be potentially devastating given the lack of awareness and high population.

Storm starting to lose a little bit of structure now. It appears that the storm to the north is starting to choke out the southern storm. The hook is becoming a little more ragged and the debris ball is no longer visible.

Bingo. I had to educate a few people on Twitter was the difference between watch and warning were (they were from the Boston area). The lack of awareness is going to be the biggest problem in this region. Worst complacency than those in the Midwest that hear sirens and don't bother.

From the sounds of it, that tornado was very near downtown Springfield, MA.

Went right over downtown. A downtown of a sizable city in New England hit by a strong tornado is just amazing!

For those who think it is impossible (or was) in New England, they need to read on the 1953 Worcester tornado.

Storm report from 10 minutes ago:

Type: Tornado
City: Sturbridge
County: Worcester
Source: Law Enforcement
Details: State police Northhampton reports Tornado on the ground in Sturbridge on Interstate 84 exit. Cars overturned.

Crud, I just realized those interstates would have some possible rush traffic from the bigger cities on it since it's after 5pm on the East Coast.

Based on the damage reports, my guess is that it was an EF3. Can't remember the last time there was a tornado that intense in New England.

I would say from radar returns, that would be a very good estimate.

Next area to watch is central and northern Maine - yes, Maine. Maybe even New Brunswick if they hold up.
