Texas Summer - 2014

It's always my favorite time of year when we start talking about the warmth of summer in Texas. I'd call it summer once we first hit 90 degrees. When will that happen in 2014? Maybe late February? March? Last year it was March 18th. Had to wait all the way to May 2nd in 2012. The first 90 degrees was on April 8th in the great summer of 2011. Those were the days...

As I posted in the spring thread, hot summers too are more likely during La Nina. Given lack there of I would put odds that a 2011 repeat is unlikely. You need troughs just off the west coast to kick out the Sonoran ridge into the plains and torch Texas, but the current Pacific configuration doesn't look like that's the favorable outcome. Of course it's always hot in Texas during the summer so where we look at is moisture. Dry summer will mean heat and wet will mean cool.

Summer, my favorite time of the year. For Texas my guess for the first 90ºF day is March 7, 2014. BTW, is this for a certain location or the whole of the state for the first 90ºF day? And my last interruption is this, what was the earliest 90ºF day in Texas history, either statewide or in Dallas? I heard about the Feb of 1986 or something being steamy.

I don't know if there is any day of the year that someplace in Texas hasn't hit 90 degrees. All it takes is a SSW-SW wind in the lower Valley and temps can approach 90 degrees any day of the year. The Lower Rio Grande Valley has already seen temps in the mid 80s this month.
For Houston (IAH) the earliest 90F+ is February 20th (1986). I created a climo page for each month here:
http://home.comcast.net/~cgh57/IAHClimo/February.htmlPerhaps we can break that earliest 90F record this year!

El Nino is coming for summer 2014. Not an official statement from the CPC but I feel very strongly confident it will arrive within the next 2-3 months and probably end up one of the bigger Nino's and possibly the biggest since 1997.

I'm thinking that the first 90F at IAH may come in May. The first 95F around June 8th-9th.

I hope our first 90F is in June sir. The first and last 95F in July and then we start cooling off.

Luckily there's going to be an El Nino! Traditional at that, they tend to limit 100 degrees to minimum. Lets petition to Canada and have them send cooler air through summer. We'll take another dose like from 1903-1906 the next few years where every year dfw registered 1 or 0 100 degree days consecutively

This is one of those things that can cause Vietnam-like flashbacks. That Summer was beyond brutal.
