Top 10 US Weather Events of 2022

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Mon Dec 26, 2022 12:59 pm

We've just gone through a blockbuster event, but with 2022 just about done, here is my top 10 for the most impactful and/or more extreme weather events of 2022:

1 - Hurricane Ian - The deadliest hurricane to hit Florida in decades brought catastrophic storm surge and wind damage as well as massive inland flooding to the Peninsula as well as damage to the Carolinas (September 26 - October 1)

2 - Summer flooding - Massive flash flooding hit several areas in late July, first in St. Louis and then catastrophic flash flooding in eastern Kentucky with nearly 50 dead in one night (July 24 - August 1)

3 - Christmas freeze and blizzard - After an intense front crossed the country, literally every region was freezing (in some cases, at historic levels) and blizzards were raging. The hardest hit was around Buffalo for the second time, and this was deadly (December 20 - 27)

4 - Hurricane Fiona - No, this did not affect the CONUS, but it did affect Puerto Rico severely, basically erasing all progress from Hurricane Maria recovery (September 16 - 21)

5 - Alaska September storm - The remnants of Typhoon Merbok merged with other storms to produce historic damage across western Alaska with massive wind and storm surge damage in numerous remote communities (September 14 - 19)

6 - Spring tornadoes - Multiple storm systems moved across the country, mainly in the South, in late March and early April with repeated tornado outbreaks, although only a few high-end tornadoes (March - April)

7 - Hurricane Nicole - The first November hurricane since 1985 added additional misery in Florida to places devastated by Ian a few weeks earlier, particularly in the First Coast and Space Coast areas (November 8 - 13)

8 - Western droughts - Continued drought affected basically the entire western half of the United States, although there were breaks in some areas from time to time and there weren't the extreme fires of 2021 (entire year 2022)

9 - November lake effect snow - Almost right after Hurricane Nicole passed, the pattern flipped and historic lake effect snow hit the eastern Great Lakes. Just outside Buffalo, there was nearly 7 feet of snow (November 16 - 20)

10 - Spring derecho in the Plains - An unusually early derecho in the central Plains brought dust storms and destructive winds from Nebraska into the Dakotas, Iowa and Minnesota in the middle of May and very significant damage (May 12)

As far as the global event of the year, I would say the historic South Asian monsoon floods, although the European heat wave and Hurricane Ian were close behind.-
