Minneapolis weather data

#1 Postby Hurricanehink » Thu Feb 22, 2024 9:39 pm

Hiya Storm2k community. I'm helping out with the Wikipedia article for Minneapolis. The climate section for the article says the climate record is from 1873 to present. But it doesn't say where that information came from. Does anyone know that information? Also, where is the current weather station for the city located? Is it at the airport? If so, that was built in 1920, so when did it become the weather station.

Hopefully someone knows! Thanks in advance.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the curated data for the Twin Cities is a blend between data from downtown St. Paul from 1871-1890, downtown Minneapolis from 1891-1938, and the airport from thereafter. The "Minneapolis area" entry on the NOWData form on the NWS page is a "ThreadEx" entry which combines data from different datasets to form a single "threaded" climate record. Those stations, per the ThreadEx website, are:

Code: Select all

1   MINNEAPOLIS-ST PAUL INTL ARPT    07/2004 to 12/2022
2   MINNEAPOLIS-ST PAUL INTL ARPT (supplied by NWS)    11/2000 to 06/2004
3   MINNEAPOLIS-ST PAUL INTL ARPT    04/09/1938 to 10/31/2000
4   MINNEAPOLIS WB DWTN    05/1891 to 04/08/1938
5   ST PAUL SIGNAL SERVICE (supplied by MN SC)    01/1871 to 04/1891

A report on the history of weather observation in the Twin Cities area is available at https://mrcc.purdue.edu/files/FORTS/histories/MN_Minneapolis_Grice_Boulay.pdf.
