ONE OTHER THING TO WATCH FOR THIS MORNING IS GRAVITY WAVE
DEVELOPMENT. INCREASINGLY DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW...NORTH OF THE WARM
FRONT...TAILING END OF THE PRECIP. HEY...IT COULD HAPPEN.

GSP mentioned in a forecast discussion with the President's Day Storm about the potential as well since it occurred back on Dec 13th, 2002 ...

Birmingham, AL is very familiar with gravity waves ... several years ago, they had a particularly damaging one ... (I have a link on my webpage)

Go here and scroll to the bottom of the page, there's a link to the Birmingham AL gravity wave (ironically this one occurred 5 years ago on February 22nd, 1998)

Why are we just now hearing about gravity waves? is this something new that has just started occuring, or has the public (read: me) just been ignorant of this weather situation?

lol they happen w/o much knowledge and can be attributed to straight line winds, microbursts, squall lines etc...all patters of strong winds. Sometimes on satellite imagry you'll see the waves set up in rows and there's intense winds associated within them....even though they arent heard of much.

The existence of gravity waves was just discovered only recently ... and tend to appear at the tail end of a large rain area north of a warm front (creating a premature dryslot) -

It's actually good to see that the phenomena is now being brought to the forefront like it has been lately ... but still, the exact reason for gravity waves is still yet unknown ...

LOL Stormsfury. Where can I go to find out more information about gravity waves? I did not know such a thing even existed.

Wakefield, VA has a great discussion and synopses on these relatively newly discovered events. I have that link on my website, as well as The December 13th, 2002 GSP episode and February 22nd, 1998 episode in Birmingham (link)...
