This is going to be a big deal as some have already talked about. I've made a couple maps of sfc low path and threats to certain areas. This is quite generalized at this point in time as it is still 3-4 days away. I might do a more specific map Sat or so. Important to note that this is for the MAIN storm, as there looks to be an episode of overrunning before the main show comes out from the West. I don't think that will amount to much and do not believe it will significantly alter the track of the main system.

I wonder if that track might not end up further east. Either way, there will be some wild weather in parts of the plains, midwest and great lakes region this weekend into early next week.

I do not think it will because of the tight baroclinic zone which should serve to make the storm at least as strong as progged if not a little stronger (btw I heavily relied on the GFS since it starts to become superior in this time range...but also gave consideration to GGEM, EC, UKMET). Also the sytem should go negative tilt and could be a little slower than progged which would not be friendly to a further east track. Also the map from 1979 (24th) had a similar situation as what is progged now. Something to watch will be the strength of the high pressure to the north which could bleed enough cold air down to create notable icing problems south of the heavy snow band. All indications are that it will be a wild show, perhaps not unlike the storm from the 12-13th of this month.

BTW, do you know how to post images? I tried and obviously something didn't work right. I did the "Img" tag and put the address in but for some reason there are just red x's.

Good points, Hoosier. I was just thinking of something that DT said a few days ago, regarding how storms seem to be going further east than progged - and that this is a trend to watch for throughout the winter.

I have had mixed success with getting images to show up using the IMG tag. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I would suggest going here and asking the mods about this issue:
