Rain, Snow Showers Hit Northeast, West
As rain and snow showers dampened the Northeast and West on Tuesday, parts of the Tennessee Valley and Deep South recorded their first freezes of the season.
Several spots in the Northeast saw measurable snow including Alden, N.Y., which received 9 inches. Other areas across western New York and into Vermont picked up 2 to 3 inches.
Light rain fell across parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine before a cold front moved offshore, leaving skies fair to partly cloudy across much of the East.
The nation's midsection stayed mostly dry, with scattered snow in North Dakota and Minnesota.
High clouds streamed across the central and southern Plains, bringing sprinkles to west Texas.
In the West, rain and mountain snow were widespread in Oregon and Washington, with several inches of snow reported across the western slopes of the Cascades.
Elsewhere, skies were partly to mostly cloudy across the desert Southwest and into California.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from 83 degrees in the Florida cities of Hollywood and Homestead, to minus 9 in Big Piney, Wyo.
