One last day tubing!

Hey friends,

Living this close to the Mts in VA, I often take Day trips to Ski, Tube and whatever else to enjoy winter! I work as a Child Therapist in the school setting, and had a few kids on a system to earn a trip tubing. Sad to say, one kid earned it, not the 5 that started..but we went today and had a blast.

It was 70 when we left the school...and close to an hour drive. Neat thing is this is a brilliant kid (12 years old) who shows an interest in weather. I told him about the average lapse rate (3-5 degrees for 1000 ft) Temp of 70 at the school...( elevation 6000 ft)...we guesssed that Wintergreen would be at 3000 -4000 ft so the guess was that the temps would be near 58...and it bottomed out at 57 top of the MT near the Tubing track.

Nice way to teach that to a 12 year old. I took a group hiking last year to Sharp Top mts here....and it was 90 at the base..Using my Kestal 4000, i told the kids we would hit less then 80 at the top and we got to 75!

Winter has been great! Hate to see it go. I doubt we will repeat the severe weather of last season here in Central VA...1 tornado with hail...and hail event and 1 incredible lighting storm, the most intense I was in for YEARS!

My ideal life is New England in the Winter,...Midwest for spring...Summer at the Beach.( Cane season)....Fall is back in NE!

Nice to hear about your tubing trip. Spring Mountain is less than a mile from my house and their ski/tubing season ends on Sunday. If I did not have a trip scheduled this weekend, I would definitely go there to do some tubing. Alas, I will have to wait until next December to go snow tubing there (unless we have a repeat of the dreaded 2001-2002 winter - in which case I will have to wait until January).

Cool trip, Huff! Tubing and traying when it is in the 50's rocks...even for a Snow Nazi like me! And it is great you are sharing wx wisdom with a kid.

You were right up the hill from me @ Wintergreen. You probably left before FROPA...we had sustained 25MPH, PWG was only 34, but awesome scuds for an hour or so.

Have faith for SVR this Spring...maybe we'll yet get to chase. If we have 3 TORs like last April in one afternoon, NO WAY I'm staying at home like last year babysitting the web site! I am outta here.
