Sustained winds of 30-40 mph with gusts of 40-50 mph is expected for southern and southeast Virginia and the lower eastern shore of Maryland until 12 midnight tonight.
A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds are 31-38 mph with gusts of 46-57 mph are expected. Showers and thunderstorms could be accompanied by isolated gusts over 60 mph from Norfolk to Virginia Beach over the next hour or two. This type of wind can cause downed trees and powerlines and potential power outages.
In addition, a gale warning is in effect for the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay from Smith Point down to the mouth of the bay. Sustained winds after the frontal passage is forecast to be 35 knots with highr gusts. Waves of 3-4 feet is expected on the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay over the next few hours. Higher gusts and waves are expected in strong and severe thunderstorms. Likewise the coastal waters can expect sustained winds to increase to 35 knots from the northwet with 5-7 foot seas from Fenwick Island southward through the Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina beaches. Very choppy waters tonight with shower and strong to severe thunderstorms likely.
