Today (what's left of it), is the Anniversary of the infamous Tri-State Tornado that roared through 3 states - Missouri, Illinois and Indiana - killing almost 700 people and injuring thousands. The statistics are staggering in this day and age of weather warnings. There has been an ongoing debate whether or not it was a single Super Tornado or actually several tornadoes that formed/dissipated along the same path for hours. This site is really well done and contains great information:

My maternal grandmother was born and raised in Gibson County, IN where the tornado/tornadoes finally dissapated. She was born in 1917 and grew up in a town called Owensville and I recall one time she told me about the Tri-State Tornado and how the sky looked black when that system came tearing through her county!
