CLAY COUNTY-- Brush fires are threatening homes in Clay County. Firefighters from multiple stations are battling two brush fires in the vicinity of Long Bay and Old Jennings Road, in Middleburg.

There is a second fire at Buggywhip and Old Jennings. The Department of Forestry is on its way. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Portions of Long Bay and Old Jennings are being closed to traffic for fire control.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL - US-1 and International Golf Parkway are closed right now in Saint Johns County.

The closure was caused by a 15-acre brush fire burning east and west of US One, near International Golf Parkway. Drivers are being rerouted on to Interstate 95.

First Coast News Meteorologist Mark Collins says the area was under a red flag warning and winds in St. Johns County have gusted upwards of 30 miles per hour. The area is also more than two inches below normal and no rain is forecasted until next week.

As of 2pm no homes were in danger.

A press release from the St. Johns County School District stated that school busses would affected by the fire. According to the release, students who ride busses that travel US-1 between Stratton Road and International Golf Parkway as well as International Golf Parkway between I-95 and US-1 will be held at their schools for parent pick up. This also includes students who live in Palencia.

Students affected by the road closings attend the following schools: Devereux School, Gaines Alternative Center, the Evelyn Hamblen Center, Ketterlinus Elementary School, Mill Creek Elementary School, Nease High School, St. Augustine High School, Sebastian Middle School, and the Webster School.

District officials say that school personnel are trying to contact parents of all affected bus students.

I haven't of any fires here in central Florida, although I haven't heard the local news since yesterday. Sure has been dry here, which isn't too rare for March.

Nine schools in that area. This indicates that Jacksonville really is a very large city in land area.

Thanks for the information.

It sure has been dry across Florida. However I saw on one of the local Orlando affiliates that the Fire Index is worse across (southern and) south-central Florida, moderate across central Florida and not as bad across north-central Florida.

Apparently, it is as bad as further down the peninsula across north Florida.
