Whew ... the images from 5:26 PM EDT really tell the story with a classic hook echo, and probably an HP supercell with that kind of base reflectivity. Also, the velocities right over Sanford are in excess of 80 kts gate to gate shear ... quite surprised the tornado wasn't a little stronger ...

yeah, gate to gate velocities were very impressive, falling just shy of the 90 KT observed w/ some of the supercells during the NB and IA outbreak the days before. Personally based on some of the damage, I would say VERY strong F1 to perhaps borderline/flirting w/ F2 intensity

also, one would expect to see some severe hail with base reflectivity returns that high, sure enough there was plenty of it --- ranging from pea to GOLFBALL size.

I would have liked to see the VIL imagery. The storms in NE/IA last week during the major outbreak of tornadoes returned a VIL of >75 (that huge cell in Southern NE. Unfortunately, I don't have any saved images of that cell on radar last week .. :(

I should assume that this cell probably had VIL's in the lower or mid 60s.

Heres the APR 18 Downburst wind event and VERY weak F0 tornado in Cayuga County.

and nother event in JUL 2003, which was MUCH closer to me. Several large trees were reported down at a campgropund right outside of DELHI.

that was the SAME system which was responsible for producing the F3 in Potter county, PA, as well as several other reports of of significant hail and wind damage that day.

the Severe weather was produced by one of the more impressive MCV's or "land hurricanes" as it did for a time have an eye-like signature. VERY impressive situation all around/

heres another shot of the line as it came through South central and NY and North central PA.

the JUL 21 outbreak was by far the most impressive severe wx episode of the season for the northeast, even more impressive than what the MAY 11 tornado outbreak, was. that event however, was a BUST for most, especially those further south in ERN PA/NJ.
