May 2004 sets record tornadoes--worse than last year....

After a very slow start to the severe weather season, numerous tornadoes occurred during the middle and later half of May. In fact, 546 tornadoes were reported last month, which breaks the previous record of 543 set last May. For the year, the United States had 694 confirmed tornadoes.

Aren't these just prelim numbers though??? They will probably fall.

That is insane. That's a 150% increase in May tornadoes compared to 2002.

It's absolutely incredible on how few fatalities there have been this year with that amount of activity.

2003's totals are final totals ... and 2004's are LIKELY to change ... and I think it will end up lower than 2003's. Anyway, we're not likely to find out for at least another 6-9 months ...
