For those who are easily chilled when the mercury shivers at below normal levels for a few days, the following are some "years without summers" for select locations in North America for which records go back at least as far as 1820.

The following are the three coldest summers (June, July and August) for each location:

Minnesota:
1. Summer 1842: 6.3° below normal
2. Summer 1915: 5.6° below normal
3. Summer 1863: 4.3° below normal

New Haven, Connecticut:
1. Summer 1816: 4.7° below normal
2. Summer 1903: 4.3° below normal
3. Summer 1839: 3.4° below normal

Toronto, Ontario:
1. Summer 1816: 7.7° below normal
2. Summer 1817: 6.5° below normal
3. Summer 1839: 6.1° below normal
