Record rains in the Baltimore area

Hey everybody. A record daily rainfall occurred in Baltimore yesterday. 4.45 inches of rain fell yesterday eclipsing the previous daily record from July 27th of 2.10 inches set back in 1897. Storm total was 5.09 inches at BWI last night through this morning. This gives us a yearly total at BWI of 29.63 inches. Compare this to last year and we're not far off the mark with over 34 inches of rain last year at this time.
Before the 1-3 inch per hour rains moved in after dark, there was a few showers and storms along the western shore of the bay. One line of showers and storms occurred just southeast of us between 5:25-6:40 PM EDT yesterday. A rainbow lasted for about 75 minutes as a result of that. It was definitely worth the sight to see. Conditions are much improved now over early this morning and last night. The saving grace today for areas west of the Chesapeake could be a mid level dry slot and it's extremely dry at mid levels. Thus storms might tend to croak west of the Chesapeake across western Maryland and northern Virginia with more isolated activity compared to yesterday across the DC/Baltimore area. St Marys County has heavy rains now and areas right along the shores of Chesapeake Bay could easily see another 1-3 inches of rain later today if more storms develop. Needless to say, this area could use a well deserved break from this wet pattern and likewise up through New Jersey especially in the Burlington County area where an f1 tornado occurred yesterday. This same area saw extensive flooding 2 weeks ago in a very heavy rainstorm, which piled up to over a foot in a few hours time. Havre De Grace saw over 8" in that storm system. A very wet period indeed. But a break is well deserved for the next couple of days.
