CENTRAL LOS ANGELES COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA


* UNTIL 915 AM PDT


* AT 825 AM PDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING
A LARGE AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TORNADO 7 MILES SOUTH OF
GLENDALE...OR ABOUT NEAR DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES...MOVING NORTHEAST AT
20 MPH.


* THE TORNADO IS EXPECTED TO BE NEAR...
PASADENA BY 850 AM PDT
MOUNT WILSON BY 905 AM PDT


WHEN A TORNADO WARNING IS ISSUED BASED ON DOPPLER RADAR...IT MEANS
THAT STRONG ROTATION HAS BEEN DETECTED IN THE STORM. A TORNADO MAY
ALREADY BE ON THE GROUND...OR IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SHORTLY. IF YOU
ARE IN THE PATH OF THIS DANGEROUS STORM...MOVE INDOORS AND TO THE
LOWEST LEVEL OF THE BUILDING. STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS. IF DRIVING...DO
NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER A HIGHWAY OVERPASS.


THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING A TORNADO IS IN A BASEMENT. GET UNDER A
WORKBENCH OR OTHER PIECE OF STURDY FURNITURE. IF NO BASEMENT IS
AVAILABLE...SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE BUILDING IN AN
INTERIOR HALLWAY OR ROOM SUCH AS A CLOSET. USE BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO
COVER YOUR BODY AND ALWAYS STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.


IF IN MOBILE HOMES OR VEHICLES...EVACUATE THEM AND GET INSIDE A
SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. IF NO SHELTER IS AVAILABLE...LIE FLAT IN THE
NEAREST DITCH OR OTHER LOW SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.

yea, i was thinking about the day after tomorrow as i read that too lol. But the weather there is fairly boring...

The question now is: Was this "warning" on their (the NWS- Los Angeles, CA) NOAA Weather Radio broadcast [cycle]?

Actually, tornadoes do occur in the SoCA area and specifically the L.A. area but most often during the Winter and specifically El Niño winters when the dynamics with the strong storm systems can trigger severe thunderstorms and even tornadoes. The strongest tornado in the LAX area has been F2. My first ever tornado experience occurred in the SFO Bay Area on January 11,1951 which I was caught in the developing surface circulation of what became a F2 tornado while I was walking to school. Tornadoes in the Desert areas of SE CA tend to be more associated with thunderstorms triggered by a monsoon surge of moisture into SE CA. This is because surges that reach that far west are usually associated with EPAC tropical remnants, MCV's from MCS's in Mexico, or GOM waves that make it across thus we have spin and dynamics available.

If it was Tom then that NWS made a big mistake. A false alarm tornado warning for that big of an area, especially when they use those words "large & extremely dangerous."

Could it have been hackers?

I have been looking on their site to see if they have anything about it. But, I haven't found anything yet.

Also... I'd hate to be woken up at 8:30am for a fake warning as well.
