(AP) A strengthening series of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens prompted seismologists Sunday to warn that the once-devastating volcano may see a small explosion soon.

is one that doesn't wipe out hundreds of square miles of forest with an explosive force of a 10MT bomb. Actually, all they are expecting are some dome building style events which, while quite capable of blowing a building apart are actually fairly small in the normal scheme of things as far as volcanoes are concerned.

If you are ever down in Costa Rica you can see small explosions from Arenal Volcano on an hourly basis. Really cool stuff if you've never anything like that before. Costa Rica is also a good place to experience an earthquake safely.

We're discussing sudden earthquakes in CA today on the off topic forum. Mt St Helens has come up in the discussion.

I still can't figure it out...are quakes "weather" or "off-topic." They're natural events, to be sure...but "weather?" Just wondering about how to classify it here on the board. Same with volcanos. I mean, it's not necessarily something a weatherman is going to forecast, right?

"Mostly sunny today with a chance of tremors in the valley."

"...and for you, Seattle, morning showers as usual and a 80% chance of PM eruption."

Shawn - now you're going way over my head!!! I can't decide either. How about we just say volcanoes and earthquakes fall into that scientific category. LOL!

I think they're worth posting about!

Since the NWS reporting network is tasked to send reports on tremors and the effects of volcanic activity, it's prefectly legitimate to discuss them on a weather board.

Aslkahuna, I guess that also means we'll have to make room for terrorism or chemical spills, etc. since I have read that we now have NOAA All Hazards radio?

Well it somewhat depends upon the type of terrorist event, but wind reports are definitely important in determing the diffusion and transport of Bio, Chemical and Radiological products in the atmosphere. Don't know about back east, but in the West SKYWARN Spotters are actually tasked to report any tremors they feel.
